The Mettle Winners

What a difference a year makes. In 2009, the wretched women’s championship was effectively over by the time the late arrivers had shuffled into Rod Laver Arena on the first changeover. In a deflating final that saw Serena Williams annihilate a hopeless, helpless and hapless Dinara Safina 6-0, 6-3, very few points, let alone games, were competitive. When Serena, inexplicably, thanked Safina for “putting on such a good show for women’s tennis” during the trophy ceremony, the unlucky Saturday night spectators groaned at the preposterousness of her remark: The painfully lopsided laugher of a final had lasted just 59 drama-free minutes.
Happily, this year’s ticketholders got their money’s worth. The up-and-down final saw world No. 1 and top seed Serena Williams conquer comeback queen Justine Henin in three tense sets. By the end of the opening game, in which Serena fought back from double break point down to, after four deuces, hold serve, it was clear that both players were in formidable form. And the first-rate tennis that was showcased over the next two hours was evidence not only of Williams’s and Henin’s physical gifts, but also of their mental fortitude.
Though she was playing in just her second tournament back from retirement, Henin looked like she’d never been away. Her adjusted serve is still a work in progress (she got only 50 percent of her first serves in), but she hung in all the baseline rallies with Serena, matching power with power. Henin’s one-handed backhand is as gorgeous as ever, and her forehand looked even more lethal than it had in 2007.
But more impressive than the fact that her tennis wasn’t negatively affected by her absence is the fact that she is still as much of a fighter as she was pre-retirement. Competing in her first Grand Slam final in two-and-a-half years, Henin didn’t appear to suffer any emotional lapses. She could have been forgiven for getting discouraged after the first set, in which she squandered two break points in the first game, another in the third game, and two more in the fifth before finally getting a break (to even the set) with Serena serving in the seventh. Henin was broken at 4-5 for that first set, and when she went down 15-40 in her first service game of the second, one got the sense that the match might be over in a hurry. Instead, the gritty Belgian gutted out a hold and then broke Serena at love to regain momentum and rouse the crowd, which was fully behind her the whole night.
As good as it is for the game to have Henin’s talent and tenacity back on center stage, it was Serena’s mettle that ultimately won her a fifth Australian Open title tonight. There’s no doubt that Serena is a superior player. But for all her weapons—the serve, the bludgeoned groundstrokes, the athleticism—her steely resolve may be her most important asset. Serena has established a stellar 12-3 record in Grand Slam finals largely because she has the ability to summon her best tennis when the match is on the line. Tonight, fighting a sore hamstring and facing an ardently pro-Henin crowd (and a fitter opponent), Serena still managed to bring her best tennis in the decisive points of the third set.
After Henin had reeled off 15 straight points, a run that started in the seventh game of the second set and lasted into the second game of the third, Serena was able to quell the momentum and reassert her game, firing one of 12 aces on the night for an emphatic hold for 1-1. Henin and Serena exchanged breaks in the next two games, but from 2-2 forward, Serena played championship tennis, winning 16 of the final 22 points against a fading Henin. Serving for the championship at 5-2, Serena hit two aces and a service winner. “My mental game is really strong,” she explained afterwards, when asked about the source of her competitive resolve. “My dad always said that tennis is 70 percent mental, and I believe that mentally I’m probably one of the toughest on the tour.”
That toughness has now won Serena 12 Grand Slam singles titles, a mark that ties her with Billie Jean King for sixth on the all-time list. Tonight, Serena was correct to express her admiration for King during another otherwise unfortunate victory speech, which was bookended with references to God and Gatorade. But though her poorly timed plug for her sponsor was as distasteful as last year’s Federer-Nadal ceremony was poignant, the night was ultimately a triumphant one for Serena. She and Henin are athletes who perform best when the competitive stakes are highest. And that ability to be clutch is the reason Williams is the 2010 Australian Open champion.
“You have this [determination] at the beginning, but you can improve a lot,” a disappointed but composed Henin said afterwards when discussing her mental game. “I was quite fragile when I was younger, then got really stronger in the important situations. And Serena proved again that she has it.”

After Serena finally won a point stopping the 15 in a row by Justine, Justine managed to win the next 2 points for 2 chances to break and keep the momentum but when the "chips" were down, Serena's serve saved the day along with her will. |

At one point I think I heard the commentators mention that Serena was actually playing a better tactical match than Henin. How far true is that? |

serena (unlike justine) has a strong mental game compared to henin. when serena is down or when she's winning points, you NEVER see her looking up at her boxs.
justine on the other hand ALWAYS looks at carlos! EVEN when the other person is getting ready to serve. its time she let go of her safety blanket and concentrates on winning points. |

I am from Ghana and had to go to a friend's place to watch. I preferred Serena winning this match to our black stars(name of Ghana's football team) winning the football world cup finals. That should tell you how happy I am. But congrats to Henin. She did well. |

Not sure it was really so mental: it was all about the serve. Serena's technique is locked in; Henin's still tooling with hers, and will need some time. |

henin has no mental game just a lethal back hand.
serena has a mental game.. remember during the quarter finals she was down a set and 4-0...if henin was playing that game she would probebly cry and withdraw.

Serena does it again; she takes several games off and then turns it back on. No one is mentally tough enough to hang with her or take advantage of the fact that she is clearly out of shape. What a disappointment for women's tennis. |

when serena is down she doesn't give up. thats why she wins her matches. the harder she gruntes the better her shots gets. henin was winning some incredible points. with the croud against her and not being able to holed some important games, serena beat the odds. im sure if it was any other player they would have cracked under that kinda perssure
LOVE YOU SERENA!!! |

Justine is doing great, but that is not Justine at her best. She's at about 70 percent of what she was in some ways before she retired. It's not just her serve, but she's hitting alot of errors on very makeable balls, the footwork is not there yet. It's great she's going for a more aggressive style, when it works, she seems unbeatable, but she can miss alow of second serve returns in the process, that really killed her last night. But overall, this should send a nice warning signal to the rest of the tour, after justine has played a few more tournaments, she's going to get into her rythmn eventually, tune more shots in, and be winning these finals, she could have won that final last night if she had. And too bad about the horrible call when Justine had break point on Serena's serve int he first set, it was game point, and her ball is called out and Serena didn't have a good play on the ball at all.. that first set was decided by one break of serve, if Justine had won that point and that game, who knows what would have happened.. |

This title should belong to Justine given Serena's horrific behavior in New York. She should have been suspended from the game for a year and should never have been allowed into this tournament. You would never see Justine, Kim or 99.9% of the other girls on tour, physically threaten an official the way Williams did on world-wide television. Apology or no apology, the fact that she was not suspended or punished in any way (and $82,000 is no penalty for her), just adds fuel to her fire of self-centeredness, lack of respect for authority, and "I can do anything I want whenever I want" attitude. She should have been boo-ed off the court the minute she walked out of the tunnel. |

I am big-time Justine Fan... And I have always supported Justine... But yesterday for once I was supporting Serena... I felt that last year Kim comes in all rested and injury free and wins the US Open, while Serena and the rest of the girls play for the entire year... It feels quite unfair.. And maybe if Justine would have won last night then it would be a royal shame on WTA... And especially Serena, who has been working hard for these past 2 years and winning slams and playing so many tournaments |

Serena is an awesome tennis player, second only to Roger Federer in the modern game. Her mental toughness and will to win is a clinic for anyone that wants to understand the meaning of mind over matter. Don't get me wrong Justine is tough and played some wonderful tennis, but expecting her to win only demonstrates a lack of understanding of what Serena is all about.
If she can stay healthy we can expect to see her win many more slams. The game with Kim and Justine in it makes Serena even more fearsome. With those two on your heels there is no room to slack off or lose focus.
Go Serena Go1 |

and FYI serena is one of the only players to not cheat...Henin on the other hand....she keeps cheating by using the people in her box for advice.
serena is the best hands down! |

I am glad that you are not on a committee. There would probably be no players playing on the court. Federer (profanity)US Open, Roddick (Australian Open
and these guys actually cursed at the Umpires. So are you saying that it is okay to dis-respect the umpire. Did you hear Justine use profanity today and the fans booed at her. Get a life and hope you can sleep. You are so miserable...... |

SHE WON!!!
and henin sucks compared to serena. i swear if the croud was against henin the game wouldn't go to a 3rd set. she needs so much motivation and support to keep her own game. thats why she cheates and get on court coaching ( which no1 seems to fine her for) |

Helen: You are not telling the truth. Agassi merely served his nomal serve wild over the net toward a linesman. That is nothing compared to what Serena did. Serena pointedly threatened to assault and kill the lineswoman for calling a footfault. Serena could have been arrested on the spot for making her threats because she actually comitted a crime. Agassi hitting the ball over the net toward a linesman does not rise to the level of an assault because first of all, all officials there have already accepted the risk of being hit by an errant shot, and secondly as you well know, there was no risk of injury. Serena should have been suspended from tenis for 6 months and 2 grand slams. She showed that there is something seriously wrong with her for which she probably needs psychiatric help. |

YOU are mistakenly wrong. serena never SAID SHE WAS GONA KILL THE LINES WOMEN. the lines women EVEN admitted to that fact.
how about that player from the ATP threating to assult the UMPIRE if he got out of his seat? im sure Helen would agree with my comment.
being suspeneded for 6 months and 2 grands slams? your over your head. THIS WAS A ONE TIME THING.
what about players like andy roddick? should they continue to CONSTANTLY argue and swear with tennis officals? and call them names??
btw ur lovely AGASSI admited to taken drugs and the ATP knew about it. shouldn't he get his titles revocked??? i guess not since his a man and white.
but EVERYBODY wants to talk about serena's outburst because she is such a good sportswomen and wins against ALL the odds.
so basically...get over it. |

What really should have happened to put Serena's New York spychopathic tyrade to rest is this: The lineswoman who was threatened by Serena should have later called the police and had Serena arrested and prosecuted for the crime which she comitted. As it is, Serena is not even sorry for her crime against the lineswoman, which is what really makes Serena look like a morally sick egomaniac. |

Interesting enough, I felt Serena wasn't hitting the ball particularly well last night, aside from the serve that is, and I think the pressure was far more squarely on Serena than Justine. I think it was telling that Serena didn't win any outright winners when she had those swinging vollies and she tentatively hit them and Justine was able to get them back for either a winner and forced Serena into an error. I also didn't see the dialed in gritty look I'm used to seeing from Serena in a slam final, so I knew something was wrong, as well as when she missed some easy forehands and backhands, she smiled as opposed to the usual look of I'm going to cry or tear my hair out. At the end of the second set, she seemed to go through the motions whereas Justine got dialed in, and at the point I got nervous and thought Justine might run away with thing, but Serena again surprised me and turned it on. I don't think either player played particularly great, just okay, and if Serena had come to play like she did in 2009 and 2007, this would have been a straight set beatdown. |

I have no problem with Serena getting mad and having a tantrum after a footfault call, and I have no real problem with her profanity. She is an emotional player and it was a difficult moment. Please correct me if needed, but didn't Serena say that "If I could I would shove this tennis ball down your throat"? Think about those words. Serena obviously threatened to assault the woman and shoving a tennis ball down her throat is a way of violently murdering her. This is the truth. I understand that people lose control, but what made it so bad is that Serena showed no remorse or sympathy for the woman, which means SERENA MEANT WHAT SHE SAID. It is the assault and murder threat combined with her lack of remorse which together constitute an outrageous exhibition by a sick person. If Serena had been sorry then I would have understood that she merely lost control, but that was not the case. In fact she is even whining about the slap on the wrist that she received!!! Since this incident had not been properly dealt with it lingers. |

I don't hate Serena and as far as tennis goes I am glad she beat Henin the cheater. What I hate is what Serena did in New York - and specifically the credible threats she made against the lineswoman combined with her lack of remorse. Last time I checked we are supposed to hate evil. When you call someone a "hater", it makes you look like an imbecile, because there is nothing inherently wrong with hating, if what you are hating deserves to be hated - such as the act of threatening to assault and kill a person without showing remorse. |

Nokomixon Farkalear-- As people explained to you when you were posting under another name yesterday, words need not always be taken literally. Nokomixon Farkalear check ur facts before you comment. SERENA WROTE TO THE LINES WOMEN APOLOGIZING. THE LINES WOMEN HERSELF SAID THE PUNISHMENT WAS TO HARSH.
AND FOR THE 100TH TIME SERENA WILLIAMS DIDN'T FINISH HER SENTECE SO U DON'T KNOW WHERE SHE WAS GONA SHOVE THE BALL.
AND IF YOU READ SERENA'S BLOG YOU WILL SEE SHE ONLY COMPLAINED ABOUT HOW OTHER PLAYER LIKE RODDICK AND MAC ARE PRAISED FOR THE ON COURT BEHAVIOUR AND YET SERENA IS SERVED WITH THE HIGHEST FEE.
THAT KIND OF BEHAVIOUR IS OUT OF CHARECTOR FOR SERENA. BUT I DARE YOU FIND ONE GRAND SLAM WHERE RODDICK HAS NOT FLIPPED OUT.
GIVE HER A BREAK, SHE'S GONE THROUGH SO MUCH IN HER CAREERS. SHE'S ALLOWED TO MESS UP ONCE.
SHE APOLOGIZED. PEOPLE LIKE YOUR SELF JUST HATE THE FACT THAT SHE CAN OVER COME WHAT HAS HAPPENED. SHE'S PUT IT IN THE PAST.
DOES SHE NEED TO WEAR A SIGN SAYING " IM SORRY" EVERYTIME SHE GETS ON THE COURT? |

Dang, people move on, some you continue to harp on the New York incident like it was the worst thing you've ever seen or as if she actually did murdered someone. The issue was dealt with and it's over, whether you like the punishment or not. It was put to bed, she was wrong, the powers that be handled it in a manner they thought was appropriate. I mean there are things in the world far far more important than whether you thought Serena should have been suspended or not, though I believe some of you just don't want her to win another slam just because you don't like her and by any means necessary you pray she doesn't as oppose to your favorite player beating her in a slam. Funny thing is no one ever took Agassi to task for trying to hitting a linesperson because he disliked a call made against him, and let's be frank, had he hit that linesperson, he could have done some potentially serious damamge. McEnroe has made a lucrative post professional career doing commercial based on his image as a verbally abusive tennis player, but we just look at him and smile and utter, "that mcenroe, he's a character!!" I truly believe if Serena was the universal symbol of a "beauty", i.e. a Kournikova or a Kirilenko, she'd be easily forgiven. |

SRW,
Why spoil a wonderful competitive tennis match by revisiting the U.S. Open incident. Let it go already. Have you ever used bad judgment or made a mistake? I'm sure you have. Would you want someone constantly reminding you of it, even long after its over? I would think not. Move on! The tennis match was entertaining. I'm glad Serena won. I really admire the way she plays. The one call on break point where the point was replayed is not the reason Justine loss. That's one point in a 3 set match. She had other opportunities to step up to the plate. Although they both have great games, Serena simply outplayed her. Bad calls are common in every match, and Serena has been involved in many horrific calls that went against her. No excuses. You play the whole match, not one point. |

A normal person who made threats because they lost control of themself would have been mortified by their own actions and apologized immediately and profusely. It is clear that Serena not only did not apologize when she gained control of herself, or at the press conference, or the next day... she only offered a statement of regret later because she was afraid of the consequences. Serena is not really sorry to this day but even now is whining about the slap on the wrists which she got! To say her punishment is harsh is totally ridiculous!!! She should have been suspended for 6 months and 2 grand slams. If I were the lineswoman I would have called the police and had Serena arrested. I'm sure the lineswoman can be coersced by Serena to say whatever Serena wants by intimidation or financial incentive. We all understand English, and we all know what happened. Serena is a sick person and her actions were outrageous. The fact that this hasn't been dealt with properly means that it will linger. |

For all of you still going on about the us open, get over it and get a grip. She made a mistake and she apologized and you along with Mary Carillo need to shut up about it. To this day Serena has not even acknowledged what she has done but is still pretending that all she did was lose her temper and yell. Until she acknowledges what she did she cannot offer a proper apology. This has nothing to do with winning and losing matches, I am glad Serena beat Henin. |

If Serena had lost control and merely made a McEnroeesque tirade about how the call was bad and the official was a stupid jerk, even if it were profane, then I would agree that it would not have been a major incident, but would have warranted the point penalty and some kind of fine I suppose. Where I disagree with some people is that I think Serena made credible threats against the lineswoman's well-being and life, never took responsibility for her words, and was not apologetic at all. Even after all this time, until Serena admits to the magnitude of what she did. she can't offer a real apology. As I said, it is understandable that she might get mad at the call under that high-pressure situation, and even get mad enough to swear. It is the threats, her failure to acknowledge what she did and her lack of remorse that are the problem. |

Jeepers people, I'm not a Serena fan but let it go already - there's no need to go bringing up New York. Serena was soundly beaten by Clijsters and that's that. Here, she showed great mental resolve by coming back against an on form Azarenka (who I still wish had won), and fighters Li Na and Justine. Neither Serena nor Justine played their best the whole match, it was up and down, but it was definitely entertaining. |

There are so many low level comments of your blog. Can Lorge do something that bring those people's comments to higher ones? I think, Tennis.com should take out from the post those nonsense that all are haters of Serena or Henin, or that all are just talking about the same incidents again and again. These comments are getting sicken. |

phenomenal final not only because it was a good match but mainly because henin is BACK and serena is in top form (commentators: stop commenting on serena's sore hamstring... henin has not played pro tennis in almost 2 YEARS!!! no excuses). This looks like it will be a really good season of tennis on both sides... as long as federer stops the arrogant murray from winning down under, haha. Murray definitely deserves to win at some point, but if that point in time never comes, I'll be just fine with that. |

How can Justine be considered the fitter player? Serena played and won both the singles and doubles, she logged a lot of court time and survived a 2 hour battle on one of the hottest days of the tournament. |

Once again, the fat girl wins with her brutal strength and power. |

now if justine and her coach can only stop the illegal coaching maybe we'd have more respect for her . i wonder what would happen if serena looked to her coach for every point? one thing the williams sisters will never be guilty of is cheating or any other rule breaking at a tournament. they are above that move. they just win and lose the way sports is suppose to be played. thats what we teach our youngsters when they begin any sportsmanship if their parents are honest. |

If SERENA IS OUT OF SHAPE AND ABLE TO BEAT ALL THE OTHER IN SHAPE PLAYERS THE WAY SHE DOES AND PLAY DOUBLES AND WIN THEM ALL.. THEN MAYBE OUT OF SHAPE IS THE WAY TO GO. JUST THE BEST THAT EVER PLAYED THE GAME.. DON'T HATE.

The words sum it up. Here is a woman, Serena Williams who basically played every day between singles and doubles and yet this "so-called" out of shape woman who was wrapped with so much tape can win both single and double championships played against fit petite women only tells me that heart and desire will trump working out every day and staying thin. The girls on the tour need heart and desire to dominate Serena and they don't have it. |

Pleeeesae Give the temper tantrum a rest! Does any of MacEnroes's "temper-tantrums" follow him in such a negative way? NOT! In fact they actually made his career and he isn't even close to the talent level of Serena. If you are a true fan of Serena and the sport of tennis then you get it and is pulling for her regardless of her flaws...and if not, you look for something to knock her. I am a true blue fan and her greatness cancels everything else, just like the men of the game. |

I'm a fan of both players, but I notice that no one try to defend Henin when people are accusing her of "cheating" (i.e. looking to her coach for advice). At one point in the match, when Serena was serving, she looked sideways to her coach (I saw it on TV), and she guessed Serena's serve correct. Now, I'm not saying that listening to her coach might help her to win 100%, but I think it should be discouraged at least, or put the coaches box high up in the stadium. |

So glad Serena won! Just rewatched the game and she has so much tenacity and self belief, it is really inspiring. I love Justines game, it is truly beautiful to watch; however, her sportmanship in this game over the years has left me with a sour taste in my mouth for her. Ever since her blatent cheating in the French Open in 2003, I have never been able to get behind her again. Serena is not perfect either, but nobody can deney what both her and her sister have done for the sport of tennis let alone for all of womans sports. They have made womans tennis more mainstream and have forced all the other player to step up their games and become better players. The game would not be the same without them. Justine can't touch that. |

tense match, yes. but not a high quality match, no. way too many unforced error from both players. and at no point in the match, did you get the impression you were seeing two players at their best at the same time. serena tuned out of the second. and henin faded badly in the third. all along this match you had this nagging feeling that ultimately serena would serve her way out of trouble and that ultimately henin would serve her way into trouble. which is exactly what happened.
and to all of those who still go and on and on and on about henin's sportmanship: get over it. if you want to concentrate on something, concentrate on her long list of charitable activities instead. |

This Abigail chic is so biased its hilarious. Complementing Serena seems to stick in the craw of this so called writer. Serena's speech was not nearly as distasteful as your write-up. Federer just thanked Rolex in his speech--what do you have to say about that. Serena keeps you mad because inspite of all your efforts she just keeps on coming!
Ridiculous! |

Let's not forget that all the pressure in that match was on one side of the net: Serena's. Henin was playing with house money--as Killer Cahill accurately put it. The fact that she came through--given all that she has been through--is a testament to her strength of character. All, but a few, of the tennis media seem to want to begrudge her this tremendous win by asserting all kinds of idiotic nonsense--but it is them who look the fool.
The Belgian "saviours of tennis" have returned, but it is the American super-power who still leads the way. Live with it! |

AMEN! Serena is supposedly less fit than Henin, yet it was Henin who was sucking major H2O toward the end--she has been on the court a lot less time than Serena. An unfit athlete would not have withstood the challenges she faced day-in-day-out, especially this second week. |

Anyway lets hope d choker elena dementieva gets a slam dis yr!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

The women's final just proved that Justine will be back again as the No.1 Player. She hasn't played enough matches and almost beat Serena. So many people here wants to forget what Serena did at the US Open and then keeps calling Justine "the Cheater". For what reason? For what she did in the french open so many years ago? That was a different and young Justine and it is history. If you Serena fans really want to be fair, forget the past and the name calling and just analyze the finals as how it happened.
If we believe everything we saw on TV during matches Serena's mom, Justine's coach, and other coaches and players are all guilty of illegal coaching. But here's the question: Have been to a real real tennis match? The truth is, it is really hard to talk and hear with your seatmate during those games. So how can the player hear what their coaches say from a significant distance? |

Wow, I sometimes wonder what reactions would have been like if we'd had the internet back in the Navratilova era. When she first started winning majors, she actually was a little chubby and out of shape, then went on to become an example for both the women and the men in her fitness regime. That big booty of Serena's is impressive; it also seems to be mostly muscle. Her size clearly doesn't slow her down in the slightest. It seems people feel threatened by her because she's got better arms than many of the top men. She is physically imposing, but backs it up with sheer will and determination.
Justine Henin took a calculated risk by "retiring" - she had 20 months to train, beef up, and work on new shots and strategies. But she still wasn't able to defeat Serena. |

So you guys never been to those venues. During competitive mathes people are restless and noisy. You real have to speak louder to converse. OK, given the fact that they can hear it, they are all all cheaters then! But the organizers don't do anything because it is hard to prove. TV cameras will show one shot with the coach talking and the player looking at the box.
I'm not bitter I just don't believe everything that the media says during broadcast. They want to pump-up and exagerate everything. Part of their job or else it will be boring. |

Dude, I have been to those venues - the only slam I've not been to multiple times is the AO.
It's not about volume and hearing - they use hand signals, anyone can see them do it. For example, in this very match, at one point Carlos indicated to Justine to serve down the T, and she did. Clear as day. |

My point is they all do that. Oracene and Richard have been doing that and even Sharapova's father and coach. Remember the banana incident?. Even Oudin like to look at her side of the box. Jelena, Dementieva and I think most women players do it. Even ATP players too. I don't take it against them because if it is really bad for the game the organizer will do something.
If a player did what the signal suppose to mean, it is still up to the players on the court. For example, Justine looked at her coach and he signals "T" and she served down the T. The receiver if she is a good tennis player should be able to read it. All points are won because of how they play and not because of something else. Cheating is if you alter the score. What is fair is fair. Serena won and Justine played a great game. I just don't like the labels people put on players. |

Doesn't "...if I could, I would..." mean I would do it but I know it isn't permitted? So what's the problem? With the apology offered and accepted and the fine paid, move on...I mean, who thought that SW was actually going to physically attack the women in front of countless thousands of people? If you say yes to that question and have no benefir of the doubt IMO you really are reaching...and isn't it funny how so many of us know EXACTLY how someone else should or shouldn't apologize but and are fresh out of the same forgiveness toward the person who made the mistake...if you can't offer forgiveness then never expect any on your own behalf when you eff up...and being human YOU WILL just wait...Anyway, congrats to all the winners and competitors at this years AO, and yes, for me that includes Serena also...! |

Serena said she would shove the ball down the lineswoman's throat IF SHE COULD. She couldn't because people were watching. But what about later after the match when people aren't watching? There is a lingering threat there against the safety of the lineswoman. Millionaire Serena can easily hire a thug while the lineswoman probably cannot afford a bodyguard. This is why it is a crime to scare people by threatening bodily harm or murder against them. Serena never acknowledged what she did, she was not apologetic, she had no sympathy for the lineswoman whom she had wronged, Serena whined about the slap on the wrist she got, and she only offered vague apology of sorts well after the incident, mainly because she was afraid of being suspended. It lingers because Serena was not honest in dealing with this incident. |

Congratulations Justine! You did not get the AO trophy but you showed for only a few matches you can beat the top players. Serena only got lucky because of the linesman call in the first set. You are the real Champion and #1 and not the current #1 today.

Right let's move on. It goes in the record of peoples memories that Serena is a person who threatens to kill people for giving her a bad call, then feels little if any real remorse or sympathy for the person whom she threatened. She is a bigger jerk than McEnroe, Connors, Nastase, or Henin. I guess that is the permanent bottom line which Serena has chosen. |

@x15...it lingers because of comments like yours:
"Millionaire Serena can easily hire a thug while the lineswoman probably cannot afford a bodyguard." WOW, projecting much? maybe that's how you would have handled the situation...but to actually go so far as to say or believe that SW anger, frustation and outburst at a misplaced linecall,(IMO), will likely result in thugs being hired to "GET" the lineswoman is absurd, maybe you are thinking of Tonya Harding's husband here and not SW...
"Serena never acknowledged what she did, she was not apologetic, she had no sympathy for the lineswoman whom she had wronged, Serena whined about the slap on the wrist she got, and she only offered vague apology of sorts well after the incident, mainly because she was afraid of being suspended." This is your opinion stated as fact, and while we are all entitled to our opinion, please don't mistake such as fact...you will only manage to
further miscommunicate the situation as awful as it was to begin with...and IMO, (see how easy that is to do), for many there is nothing lingering in this case, it's BEEN over...! |

and people, was it not Justine who withdrew from a tournament two weeks ago, with a minor injury? She had to play Serena in this tournament as well.
But Serena, a girl who at the end of this tournament had around five injuries, but played THROUGH them all. Now that is determination. Justine can not even be compared to Serena when it comes to grit and determination in the game of tennis. Justine is a cheater, and we all know this.
People who bring up Serena's tirade. GET OVER IT. it is sooooo annoying to hear people constantly bring it up. Including damn Mary Carillo. Just move on. She won here. She is the best in the game. You can't deny it. |

Suspending her would have been a case of the USTA shooting itself in the foot - the Belgians "retired" by choice, but the USTA would be foolish not to allow Serena Williams to play - and win! US player development seems to be in the crapper at the moment - after the disappointments of Donald Young and SuperK, where were the American juniors this year?
Serena Williams is an example of what makes the US a great country. Mary Carillo was just some hack 35 years ago. |

X15, You nailed it in the head. A person's real character is when nobody is watching.
When did Justine cheated? How can she manipulate the points controlled by the umpire? Tennis is all about playing the points. Those Serena injuries are fabricated. Wake up peeps! If she lost she has an excuse because she has injuries and if she wins she tell the press that she won even if she not 100%. At least Justine is true to herself, if there is an injury she won't play. Just like Nadal he wants to stay healthy long term and sacrificed the quartefinals match. Not everybody is in his/her best condition everytime but Serena created that injury ploy. What does it means? Cheating herself!!!
MARY CARILLO IS JUST STATTING FACTS! |

Serena is not the type of player that blames a loss on her injuries. so Marat quiet. The sydney final is a great example. Yes, Serena was injured, but she did not blame it on that. She even said elena played a great match. Justine on the other hand, played down Kim's win in Brisbane by saying she was injured. You are sooooooo wrong Marat. "If there was an injury she won't play" Ummm Hello! she was injured in Melbourne. Did you not see the black tape on her inner thigh? DUH!
Why the hell did Serena play 12 matches in 12 days? Because she is dedicated with or without injury. She can beat anyone with a ton of strappings, and she proved it. She won, get over it. |

serena won the match, and new she wanst 100 percent fit, eshe said it, and if she lost she still would have said it, cuz its true, she played more matches than anyone in the tournament having played all her doubles AND singles matches, plus comming into the tournament banged up. dnt talk about serena , henin retired two months after serena gave her her worst beating of her career at miami finals 2008 : 6-1, 6-0, and it wasnt even like justine didnt play well, she did, but serena IS THE BEST, and no matter how much u ppl ignore it, and not admit it, IT CHANGES NOTHING. she will keep winning, and u ppl will keep complianing to YOURESELVES, because reality check- serena doesnt read what ur saying, and she doesnt care, she is the best, and she dont need YOU PPL to tell her, her titles says enough... |
