Roland Garros: Clijsters d. Yakimova 05/24/2011 - 2:31 PM

Kc No matter how she's moving, the way she's serving or what she's wearing, we know one thing about Kim Clijsters: Her groundstrokes are going to be better than her opponents' almost every time. Anastasiya Yakimova, Clijsters' first-round opponent today at Roland Garros, was not in that exclusive minority. We could tell by her shots—they had too much net clearance to be threatening—and by Clijsters' throughout her 6-2, 6-3 win. I specifically recall a crushed second-serve return (forehand, up the line) to take a double-break lead in the first set, but Yakimova was regularly pressured by an array of Clijsters forehands and backhands.

Playing in her first French Open since 2006 and her first match since Miami, Clijsters advanced comfortably but was far from flawless. Her serve was skittish and she often pressed, particularly when serving up 5-1 in the first and second sets; she was broken each time. Still, on both occasions she owned an insurance break, so you can discern how Yakimova served: Yuck. Clijsters broke her six times in all, though the No. 2 was broken thrice herself.

Returning from a severe ankle injury, I was curious to see Clijsters' footwork. It worked for me, and it certainly wasn't the reason this match got interesting at the end, when Clijsters nearly coughed up a double-break advantage. After a trio of terrible errors, Yakimova had a trio of break points to get back on serve, but Clijsters saved them all, along with a lot of energy. That's perhaps the most important takeaway from this match, if you're in the business of forecasting how someone who hasn't played in two months can possibly win a Grand Slam title. But that's pretty much what Clijsters did at the 2009 U.S. Open, right?

First

I never got to do that before. Anyway Clijsters played decent enough, but i would still give an edge to Sharapova in the Quarters, should they both make it so far. Both are experienced at grandslams to go further. But it would be pretty new to Sharapova, she hasnt reached semis at a grandslam since she won AO 2008.
Looking forward to this blockbuster Quarterfinals...

Yes, she is okay bc Clijsters is a complete liar. I'm so sick of the "good girl" image allowing her to get away with any lie. Who injures their ankle to the point of ligaments being involved and then you start back training in a month's time and now is in tip top form for a Grand slam? No human that I know of.

Clijsters, just say that you didn't want to play the clay court season. If that had been anyone else, the commentary of suspicion would have been everywhere. It's ok to play an brief schedule, it's not ok to exaggerate an injury just to get a cindarella story brewing in order to gain attention at the French. So over her.

What on earth is Kim wearing at RG? Kim, you can say no to a sponser you know! That kit looks like some Pepto-Bismol/grape cough syrup nightmare.

Posted by wilson75 05/24/2011 at 03:16 PM

I remember Clijsters playing two tournaments before the USO so she wasn't exactly cold going into that tournament. Anyway it's still too early to tell how she will do at RG, Yakimova never really tested her so she looked good today. It was assumed that just because Henin unretired and reached the final of AO last year that she was going to runaway with the RG title and we saw what happened there.

Violetta,
I read that Kim was given that outfit for her birthday when she was young and wanted to wear it if FILA could find the pattern.

Posted by Bgreps 05/24/2011 at 03:35 PM

@ Thomas. You've got some nerve to imply that Clijster's lying. Have you got real proof? Did you actually hire an investigator to monitor the evnts of Clijsters' life? I am part of Clijsters team I can easily suggest to track your ip address and have you prosecuted for libel. Unless you have official evidence, shut your pie hole. That's a warning for you.

MA,

I believe you, because only a child could love that outfit.

Clijsters was hitting the ball very well against Yakimova, but moving somewhat gingerly. Lots of players hit the ball very well these days, but what sets Clijsters apart is her superior movement, and if that's gone then she's just an ordinary WTA-level player.

Yakimova did very little to test Clijsters's movement today, but it will be a different story if Clijsters plays Maria Kirilenko in the third round.

I certainly can't see Clijsters going all the way here.

Wow this thread got ugly pretty quick.

She is come back and she is the winner in RG

Posted by MashaFan 05/24/2011 at 05:13 PM

What beats me is that the article about Maria Sharapova - who won her match 63, 60 was so negative - like that wasn't a real test etc - but when it comes to Kim match - it's suddenly some kind of proof that she's a serious contender to win the RG

I'm not saying that she isn't - but be fair will you? - Masha's victory was as good if not better than Kim's

Posted by MashaFan 05/24/2011 at 05:23 PM

And yes - what a terrible outfit Kim wore - *lol* - The best dressed women on the tour are the ones who use Nike clothes - Bojana Jovanovski for sure lost the match to Kim - but she looked way better in her Nike outfit - *lol*

Like Andrea Petkovic - still wearing the same Adidas outfit she wore in the Miami tournament - what's the matter with these sport manufacturers - Have they never heard of marketing? - *sheesh* - Nike seems to be the smart one to say at the least - Look how they use Masha to display their products

Posted by Jerell 05/24/2011 at 05:45 PM

MashaFan,

It clearly was MORE competitive....unlike Lucic, Yakimova kept the ball in the court, and Clijsters lost concentration and consistency.

Lucic just went away in that match, as her career represents, and it was a dreary match.

Posted by Jerell 05/24/2011 at 05:45 PM

But you wouldn't know objectivity MashaFan, clearly, as your love of the Shriester shows.

Posted by VikaNumber1Fan 05/24/2011 at 06:14 PM

I stopped watching the Lucic Sharapova match after Lucic lost the first game of the second set. I was very surprised she even managed to win the 3 games against her in the first set, but she could not keep that composure long enough. After that, Lucic could not keep a simple rally going. She missed routine shots, had no rhythym whatsoever and gave Maria that easiest first round win ever.

@thomas
It's a stretch to see Clijsters wanting to skip it all except for RG.

Posted by Pete Ram 05/24/2011 at 06:45 PM

I hope Maria or Kim wins the Final they are both great for our sport Not Caroline she is just little not exciting to watch! she is a good player but not the exciting player like Maria or Kim!

Posted by cjrichter 05/24/2011 at 06:46 PM

The only thing that was curious to see if Clijsters movement would be hampered by the 'serious injury'(?). She did just enough to win without exerting too much physical effort. There were some patches of a 'lapse of concentration' but the thing that caught my eye was in one of the exchanges Kim slid on the clay, favoring her right ankle, in near splits mind you, and got up without incident. Hmmm, this might get a little interesting as the tournament goes on.

Posted by Sam 05/24/2011 at 07:55 PM

What the H are you talking about this being positive to Masha's positive?! RG website called her a contender after she won, and this article about Kim says she was far from perfect. They constantly bash Kim and point out every flaw in her match even though its after 2 months and she WON.

Please stop being so bias and see that commentators are positive and negative to ALL top players.

I agree with...........................................SAM!!!!!! Right whatever you should say what you want and i had the same thing on my mind!

Posted by Sal 05/24/2011 at 08:37 PM

Love Kim playing again, and her hairdo seemed to say "Don't mess with me!"

Posted by tennyrunners 05/24/2011 at 09:14 PM

I might be the only person who liked Kim's outfit today...

Posted by Robert 05/24/2011 at 10:59 PM

I love Kim and I hope she trashes Sharapova just to piss off her annoying and haughty fans.

Posted by thomas 05/25/2011 at 12:06 AM

@bgreps, stfu, look up my ip address, u sound too stupid to know what an ip address. Yes, it was obvious that she didn't want to play the clay court season. No one recovers from an injury of that magnitude like she claims she did. She's a liar. Maybe she twisted her ankle a little, but ligaments involved...lies. She doesn't want to play that much tennis and that's cool, but isn't the first time she has come up with an excuse beforehand to make sure she has an out just in case she loses. I don't want sharapova to win anything but I definitely want her to beat Clijsters lying ass.

Posted by Jankofan 05/25/2011 at 02:06 AM

I think there is some true in that Thomas writes. Kim only wants to play GS and maybe a few more.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 05/25/2011 at 02:15 AM

I don't think Kim went into the USO quite so cold - she'd been training hard in preparation, played that exo at Wimbledon, and didn't she play the two US hard court tournaments beforehand?

That dress is awful.

Posted by Master Ace 05/25/2011 at 09:16 AM

Jewell,
Yes, Kim played Cincinnati and Toronto before the USO when she returned to the tour in 2009.

From ESPN columnist:
Wozniacki acts her age: Caroline Wozniacki is only 20, so you can forgive her for being, at times, petulant. But acting the way she did against Aleksandra Wozniak won't win her any friends.

After the chair umpire inspected a mark in the second-set tiebreaker of Wozniacki's 6-3, 7-6 (6) win, the Dane didn't like the ruling, which went against her. She conversed with the ump for what appeared to be minutes, demanding that the linesperson who was on the baseline pick out the mark on her lob in question. Her objections continued even as dad Piotr urged her to forget about it and move on.

Wozniacki acted similarly against Yanina Wickmayer in Rome.

sorry - i posted the above in the wrong thread.

yep bgreps is a little bit high on something, nobody's going to track your exact location for a civil case of libel, even FBI doesn't get involved unless it's more than 50k loss domestic (250k)... anyways the most he can get is city you're in, don't believe me? check http://ip-address-lookup-v4.com

libel.... puhleaze!
