Hello everyone,
Just a drive by post to say congrats to Andy. I'm glad it was close cause I also like Steps. Also to the French pair in the doubles.
A few comments regarding posts on the DC thread:
AM,
I enjoyed your report. Great job, looking forward to more.
Dianne,
Hope you're having a great time in Sydney and you can watch some good matches at Medibank.
Imjimmy,
Thanks for your take on Rafa. I still think He. Will. Be. Fine. but then again I'm probably just delusional.
And before I leave a c'mon or is it allez? to Stan. I like Marin just fine but I'd like Stan to get this one.
Bye for now |

Being a diehard Rafa fan I desperately want him to start winning big-time again. To this end a few minor changes are inevitable, in particular:
1. He should dump Tio Toni and get instead a real coach, who could teach him how to win ugly, for instance Brad Gilbert.
2. His current girlfriend does not seem to be very helpful. Perhaps he should go for a few long-legged blondes. Reportedly they could be quite inspiring. I am sure T. Woods could provide some phone numbers for a start.
3. Also, I do not like his current racquet at all. But, as I am not an expert in racquet technology, I would leave it to his supplier to sort out the mess again.
4. Needless to say, his backhand is in great need of improvement. I am sure D. Cahill could be instrumental in fixing it.
5. Last, but not least, he needs a sport shrink to help him rebuild his confidence, as the watter bottles cannot do the trick anymore. |

So happy Marin defended his title at Chennai, even if it was such an ugly match. Two finals ended with 7-6, 7-6 scorelines this weekend. I enjoy the 21st-century luxury of streams, but they always cut out before the trophy ceremony. Guess I'll turn on Tennis Channel tonight.
Rafa's confidence will come with wins, not a new girlfriend or sports shrink. It might be time for a "real" coach, though. Still, I wouldn't bet against him in Melbourne.

*waves hello*
Thank you for the match call, Master Ace. :)
Pete - you could say Henin had a little choke too; she served for it, no? And there were certainly nervy moments for both Davy and Rafa (although Kim's drop off in level was rather drastic.) Even if Kim did choke, can't she get some credit for not letting it destroy her completely, and coming back to win in the TB?
There was still plenty of great, varied hitting and good - and gutsy - play in both matches, but sadly it doesn't seem as if any of the good stuff in Kim-Henin is going to get much attention. |

Jewell,
Good morning(afternoon in UK) and you can say that Henin choked serving for the match as she won 8 games in a row to take set 2 and a break lead in the decider. By the way, we got a little more snow on Friday which stuck on the ground for 30 minutes. Snow was way less than at Wimbledon. Then, on Saturday morning, we had a snow dusting for a few minutes. There has been a lot of exciting tennis this weekend therefore, I am not shocked TW was almost deserted for the finals at Brisbane for ATP and Chennai.
Tennis Channel will show the replay of Kim, who gave her winnings to a local hospital, and Justine in Brisbane final at 11:30 AM |

thanks for the new post, pete.
Tio Toni isn't the problem, it's francisco roig. they just fool around and don't do much, although he did win IW last year with roig so what do i know. And i love his new strings. big improvement in pace and depth imo. possibly having mama and gf go home would be a good idea. as for toni, rafa has one of the toughest mentalities in the game because of toni. Also, the best attitude. personally i can't wait for toni to get to australia. |

And even then it all probably has a little bit to do with the other player refusing to lose; I seem to remember Henin and Kolya having tough holds to avoid going down double breaks which might have given them a little extra too.
I didn't see the third set but I remember Henin's serve being under more or less constant pressure in the first and second so I'm not sure she actually did choke, to be honest. Kim didn't choke in the third set TB, either, at 6-3 up; either Justine won the points, or Kim went for something and just missed. At least, that's what I think. :)
Oh, they were good matches! Amazing that it's only the first week of the year. :)
Congrats on the snow, Master Ace! Glad it didn't make anything too difficult for you. We are still blanketed and it's snowing lightly now, sigh. Managed to drive the car out today though, good as I was going a bit stir-crazy. :) |

Sevus, don't blame so much Uncle Toni, Rafa girl friend and racquet yesterday lost match
He was playing great, 6-0 first set, later I don't have idea what happened through his mind, he could have won perfectly well. The day before was Davydenko who said feeling tired but yesterday he looked like he's 20 years old, I really don't get it |

jewell, I'm with you -- I can't believe we've had good matches like Davydenko and Clijsters already. And I suspect Justine vs Kim was good. I only caught the last 15 minutes live (and loved it) but will know more once I catch the replay on Tennis Channel. |

I'm okay with the "who can hold" element so long as it's not splling over with DFs. That's when it becomes a comedy of errors. |
|
Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. |
01/10/2010 at 11:52 AM |
Hi Bobby. :)
There were sucky moments, quite a few DFs for both, and Kim's level of play did fall off a cliff in the second - but overall I thought it was a good match, and there were some brilliant points.

I don't think it's that bad. I guess anything is better than those patterned pants Rafa will most likely be wearing at AO.
I actually prefer the outfit in the first pic without a collar.

Pete- I hope you are right about the new layout. Regular posters will probably be able to follow the trail of bread crumbs to the current CC and/or whatever 'your call' evolves into, but I worry that those who are not regular visitors, but enjoy coming here during major tournament, may get lost and turned off. I guess we will see.
As for Henin/Clisters...we yeah, I suppose there were moments from each of 'chokiness', but jeeze, the main thing I am getting from the TC replay of the match is the high quality of the majority of the tennis. From both players. I mean there is/was some SERIOUS shot making and hitting going on.
And so nice to see Kim and Justine exchange smiles after their cat/mouse/cat/mouse exchange at the net. |
|
Posted by Master Ace |
01/10/2010 at 01:23 PM |
CL,
Agree about the cat and mouse by the Belgians where Kim won the point when Justine got her racquet to volley but ball sailed wide. Kim should have won that point earlier by hitting up the line instead of CC. |
|
Posted by CL |
01/10/2010 at 01:29 PM |
Master Ace - this match is like a trip in 'the way back' machine from Rocky and Bullwinkle. Both Kim and Justine look virtually the same as when they left the game ; their games are essentially the same - but with some real improvements - and they are both hitting the ball so cleanly and so well..as they did in days of yore - occasional botched overheads aside - It is a real pleasure to watch. |

LOL, Pete. I'll never understand why you have such strong feelings associated with Kim.
Didn't see any of Kim's matches. But, Justine looked good in the lead up to the final. She forced her opponents to play clean tennis to get points, making for good matches (against Czink and Ivanovic).
Curious to see how both (actually all three of) the Belgians fare against Serena. Re is probably pissed off right now...post USO. And, if the past is a predictor, she'll probably win Oz without dropping a set. Hopefully, the draw gods are kind and they clash in the later rounds.
Good-bye Safina. |

here's my Day Two recap fr Medibank... off to my third day of work today. see you all tonight.
where to begin? for starters, i was early. hehe. our proper court assignments start today and guess who got lucky... Ken Rosewall Arena 2 days in a row. woot!
first match was Dani vs Razzano. i didnt see anything particularly striking about the now Cahill coached Dani. a lot of her shots are still quite loopy, but still good to see her win in straights. she is a pretty as i thought she would be.
there wasnt really much to do but open and close the gates when changeover starts and ends tennis watching comprise the rest. pretty sweet deal... but the kinda rough part was the heat beating down smack dab on our side of the stadium. nice and toasty... not. i don't know how the players do it, it was mid thirties and zero cloud cover!
after Dani won, it was tiime for Sveta and Kleybs. i thought Sveta's shots would have more pop in them, kinda expected harder hitting, to be honest. must say that i was actually more worried about whether i'd see the hair wringing fr Kleybs! LOL thankfully it never did. that weirdly off pose she does on the FH? even more wince worthy when seen live.
when i got to my lunch break, decided to spendd about a fifth of it actually having lunch and the rest wandering the practice courts. Read: watching Richard Gasquet. hehe oh and Sam Querry and Lleyton having a hit. thought Lleyton's hair was even worse in person haha. i strongly suggest seeing "V" for Verdasco when trying to pull off a fauxhawk. this one was an epic fail. oh well at least those gs look good and solid on the practice courts.
back at work, Sveta finally finished off Kleybs, after having a rather non authoritative second set. after i was done for the day i met up with one of TW's own, Nic. we had a blast just walking around seeing all the quallies finish off and hitting the practice courts yet again.
saw Ross Hutchins, who i thought was taller than he looks on tv/streams... and Pretty Pretty Feli, of course. it's mandatory to see him at least once at the practice courts, no? good thing i didn't take a vid, cos damn does he have a potty mouth on him.LOL
highlight of the day: pic with Nenad, not just ahem bumping into him. he was so nice about it, even asking me, "a picture with me??" aw too sweet. which of course led to this:
2 teenagers: we're sooo jealous of you!!!
me: why???
2 teenagers: we saw you and Nenad take that pic!
learn it and learn it well, dear fangirls: you either jump at the chance or kick yourself when it's passed
oh and you heard it here first: Z (as Troiki who was on the same practice court calls him) has fangirls.
and by fangirls, i mean actually still in highschool kind of girls. hehe
Daniel Nestor and Troiki were having a hit together when Viktor decided to call out a bet, him and Nenad vs Nestor. The wagger: a Serbian dinner, upon hearing this Nic and i burst out laughing, drawing looks fr the Serbs (might i point out that Viktor was a little too enthusiastic abt the wagger, must be homesick) i was too distracted to record this. meh. but i did get a bit of it with Vik having a little fit at the end of a point.
after watching a teeny bit of Kimiko play Rodionova, i decided to check ou the practice courts one more time, cos i was still holding out on seeing Dina practice on my second day there. glad i made the walk back there cos there she was in the farthest court possible, having a practice match. with Zelkjo around, of course. i hate the mesh thingy behind the fence with a deep dark passion. ugh! Dinara was like a foot away and i cant take on decent pic :P she looks like she lost some weight. it's not just the pictures. girl needs a sandwich. or chocolate cake, as the case may be.
Lena D was the last i saw before we left the venue. there was a large group of male fans gathered at her court. most armed with high tech cameras, naturally.
looking forward to the rest of the week as the second day of main draw action unfolds tomorrow. can't wait to see all the others play, especially JJ who i have yet to see around the venue, like Serena.
PS:
the stadium has ginormous tarps of players adorning the outer walls, but half the players are not even committed to playing here like Fed, Rafa, Masha, AI and Jo Wilfried! decorations fail. |

Just watched the replay of Kim/Justine, and all I can say is, "WOW!" Justine took to the final like a duck to water and never blinked. WTA 2010 will be a far cry from last year's DF Festival. |

CL, I don't think Safina has a shot at a GS. Before there was at least the hope that someone other than Serena would be in the final, and match her choking. Now, if not Serena, then one of the Belgians will be on the other side. Masha is also a possibility...though I have no idea how she's playing atm. Safina's chances 0.00001%, imo. And, besides HC is not really her best surface, I'd give her a 0.01% chance of winning RG.
Anyways, maybe she can still be #1 ;-). |

Catching a bit of Hopman cup, and I must say Laura Robson is pretty as a picture and cute as a button and several other cliches. She looks like she just stepped out of a Jane Austen novel...though I don't think they sweat QUITE so much in most Austen novels. And prolly wore a little more.
mina - great reports...really fun to read. Thanks. |

mina, tx, sounds good.
Not sure how much highlights are an indication of a match, but usually if a 3 set match generates about 10 mins of highlight reel points...it's pretty good. Here's the Justine-Kim final:

Some of the points are just insane. Can't wait for Oz.

Pspace - lol... I hear ya...maybe she had a mind transplant while she has been not playing?
Anyway - I just hope one or both of the Belgians makes it through... watching them play is a real pleasure. Yeah, maybe neither one is perfect in the 'oops match point on MY racket - OH NO Mr. Bill' sense...but really, who is? and they are tough as can be in so many other ways. |

What Safina needs is an opponent across the net from her who shakes a fist in her face while screaming, "YOU CHOKER!!!" When that happened in the third round at RG 08, she got mad, won that match and went to the final. She lost the final to Ana, though. |

wow after watching Henin Clijsters, all I can say is, these two women can play tennis! finally, after the embarrassments of last year, women's tennis is breathing again, big time... this is what performing under pressure is all about, not these tear riddled messes we endured last year who shake in their shoes at the thought of a break point ... just need Henin to rise up the ranks quickly so the draws dont get screwed up and eveyrone ends up in one quarter... |

the nightmare of course is that henin clijsters and serena all end up in one 16, just watch it happen! while messes like Azarenka, Safina and other double fault machines glide through another section... |

AM, are you a lineswoman? If you are and a player incorrectly challenges one of your calls, please do a fist-pump + "vamos".
And, keep the reports coming. |

AM, hehe, hadn't thought about the potato sack. Although, it seems like a nice idea for linespeople. If a player gets pissed with you, you can hide in your sack ;-). |

mina - just jumping on the bandwagon with everyone else to say I'm loving your reports :).
Nic - couldn’t stop laughing - KDK = “She Could Be My Mum”!!
AM - I see you used Chanel sunglasses to help take the focus away from the Potato Sack! But at least the Sack helped out - “I spotted Jelena Janokvic on court being in official uniform sure helps I just waded through the people that were watching her and took central spot.” - so I guess there’s some good to be said for it :).
The three of you sound like you’re having a ball. Thanks for sharing all the fun with us :). |
