WinterWonderland

By Jackie Roe, TW Social Director

Echoing Pete's sentiments in his Seasons Greetings post, I send my warmest wishes to the TWibe for a joyous and peaceful holiday season!

How are folks spending their Christmas Eve? It's actually my mom's birthday—poor thing always gets cheated out of a proper celebration—so we're not too focused on what's happening tomorrow . . . though the prospect of Christmas morning always makes me just a little bit giddy. I'm reminded of my childhood, when my sister and I would race downstairs in our PJs and slippers and marvel at all of "Santa's" surprises under the tree. No tree this year, and no presents to shake or squish (they only seem to come in card form these days), but the feeling still lingers.

Of course, feel free to use this post to talk tennis or share holiday stories over the weekend.

Now, a special announcement:

This is your official invite to our annual Virtual Holiday Party, hosted by Pete and yours truly!

Date: Thursday, 12/30
Time: 4 PM EST/TW time

Hopefully that time works for everyone, including our friends abroad. (I'll be fashionably late because of work, alas. Wait for me.) Please stop by, and let us know in the comments if you plan on bringing any treats or tunes. Anyone who does will get a shout-out in the party post—now that's incentive.

For those who weren't around for our previous virtual holiday parties, check out last year's celebration here. We know how to live it up!

Looking forward to it. 'Til then, have a restful weekend, and happy holidays, everyone!

Merry Christmas Master Ace and Jackie,

Finished dinner and just got Olivia into her Santa pj's. We are expecting a dusting of snow here in Atlanta tomorrow, a very rare thing so it should be a fun Christmas morning.

Posted by Jackie 12/24/2010 at 07:35 PM

Hey Diane! I didn't miss you this time! It's snowing as I speak...

Olivia must be excited for Christmas, eh? :)

A Happy Christmas Eve to all from my dad's home in the fine community of Horsepasture, Virginia. Watching one of my favorite Christmas movies "Scrooge." I love singing the song "I Love Life" throughout the year.

Posted by susan 12/24/2010 at 08:08 PM

Posted by susan 12/24/2010 at 08:10 PM

that's off to work, can you believe it?
hope to speak to some family via phone today. i think they called at the wrong time (as usual) this morning (5 am!) while I was asleep. why are time zone differentials so difficult?!!!

Posted by Jackie 12/24/2010 at 08:12 PM

Perhaps not ... but I like responding to e-mails. :)

Wait, our holiday party will start at 4 AM for you?? Worry not, I'm sure we'll keep it going for hours. Hopefully you can catch the end? Fingers crossed.

Happy holidays, love!

Posted by Jackie 12/24/2010 at 08:21 PM

Okay, being a bad daughter. ;) Time for birthday dinner, then candlelight service. Will try to check in periodically.

Hope everyone is staying warm, traveling safely, enjoying this time with family and friends, etc. And warmest wishes to all, once again, for a very Merry Christmas and a festive holiday season!

Hi Jackie, merry Xmas from Kuala Lumpur, it has already arrived here. Though it's just another holiday here, Xmas celebrations are limited to a lunch with colleagues at some fancy place and a late afternoon get together with friends at some bar in the week before. Many of locals, as well as other regional expatriates like me, usually take this time of the year to go back home on long leaves.

So, with most friends out of town, I am at bit of a loose end. But I just got back from a 4 week trip to Houston, week before last, so quite happy to potter around in my apartment. Might round up someone later this afternoon to see a movie. Or watch youtube clips of some of the matches I missed in the last month / earlier this year, or even dig up some old pair ice-skating clips from 1992/ 94 winter Olympics if I am really bored. Already checked out NP's link to Tchaikovsky - Waltz Of The Snowflakes in earlier thread, it's really wonderful.

Heard about all the travelling woes in Europe, isn't this like 3rd or 4rth year in a row that something has happened there just around Xmas time. Hope everyone makes it safe and sound to their respective destinations and happy holidays to all.

Posted by CL 12/24/2010 at 09:32 PM

Jackie - holiday cheer to you...my Dad's birthday was Christmas Eve as well. He made a yearly, 3 act play about the injustice of it all...lol..and therefore, got TONS of presents, even if most of them we VERY silly.

Posted by Jackie 12/24/2010 at 10:01 PM

HA, great photos, Tic!

Merry Christmas right back at ya, jita! My vote is for the skating vids - Gordeeva and Grinkov will make you feel all warm and fuzzy. :) (Wait, that was before '92, no?)

CL! Happy holidays to you! And I love the story about your Dad - my mom's not so lucky. :(

Posted by Heidi 12/24/2010 at 10:15 PM

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it! I haven't been as active around here this year, but still am very fond of the blog. And what a lovely idea for an online party! I'll try to join in.

Posted by CL 12/24/2010 at 10:17 PM

Aw, Jackie- sorry about your Mom. Cheers to you all.

NP - I recently saw the Nutcracker Suite performed by a brass quintet. With a Tuba solo for Waltz of the Flowers. That Peter Y - he could sure write a tune.or two..or a hundred or so...

Posted by Monica 12/24/2010 at 10:23 PM

Merry and Blessed Christmas to all who celebrate! and to all who don't celebrate still wish many blessings at this time and to come. wishing much happiness and good health to all in the coming years! Enjoy!

Thanks Pete and Jackie for this great place for tennis talk and updates!

Jackie, Gordeeva & Grinkov were there in 1994; but my favourites were Dimitriev & Mishkutenok. Hey, even found one of my favourite performances from them, video quality isn't great but it was still worth going down the memory lane :)

Merry Christmas, Heidi! Good to see you here. And I do hope you'll be able to make it to our party!

Enjoy the holidays, Monica! And we thank YOU for being a part of this fantastic community.

jita, watching the video now. :)

Posted by Jackie 12/24/2010 at 10:35 PM

Oh great, now watching Gordeeva/Grinkov and starting to tear up ...

Posted by NP 12/24/2010 at 10:47 PM

"That Peter Y - he could sure write a tune.or two..or a hundred or so..."

CL, Swan Lake is even better as an endless supply of memorable tunes, but yes, Peter was one of the best tunesmiths ever. Try to name one piece that boasts as many sparkling tunes as The Nutcracker--you won't be able to come up with little more than a handful. Even Schubert would've been jealous.

Also, Tchaikovsky's phenomenal command of orchestral colors deserves an honorary mention. Respighi is the last big-name composer who came close, but he had just a tenth of Peter's magic wand.

Posted by NP 12/24/2010 at 11:06 PM

jita65, glad you liked the music. I also don't remember seeing your name before. If you're new, welcome to TW.

More tidbit: Hard it may be to believe, but Tchaikovsky didn't care for The Nutcracker that much. He thought--correctly--his 2nd ballet The Sleeping Beauty superior. Here's the famous waltz from the ballet (IMO, the best orchestral waltz ever written--the single-instrument honor still belongs to Chopin):

Posted by jita65 12/25/2010 at 12:15 AM

Thanks NP, not exactly new here, but don't post as much, though read up whenever I can. I will keep an eye on future events at the Philharmonics hall in KLCC for Tchaikovsky. Actually my cousin, in some fit of house cleaning has recently dumped a whole set of odd CDs on me, there is a 4-CD collection of Gypsy music from eastern European countries, one CD from Golden Series of Russian Choral Music (Igor Ushakov?), there are 3 CD titled in Russian so I don’t know what they are .. but there is one CD of Tchaikovsky (says Violin Concerto and Rococo Variations). I still have to check these out :)
Sorry Jackie, didn’t mean to make you sad, but they were a lovely couple.

"Dec 31 at 6 AM: Federer vs Soderling or Tsonga

Is that Eastern standard time?

Posted by Crybaby Fed/Puny Server Rafa Fan 12/25/2010 at 01:31 AM

Oy, I am definitely excited/worried (defends on which side I lean, that is) about crybaby Fed's new wide serve to Ad side that NOBODY, especially puny server Rafa, can return. Ever since YEC, if Fed hits the spot even slightly well with his 1st serve, Fed didn't lose any single point I can think of.

Posted by NP 12/25/2010 at 03:52 AM

You'll shoot your eye out!!!

Posted by NP 12/25/2010 at 04:15 AM

jita65, T's violin concerto is one of the more famous (and, of course, popular) ones. And also one of my faves. Definitely worth a try. (OTOH I don't like his arguably more popular piano concerto as much.)

zenggi, gracias, but just to let you know, even in virtual reality I'm still very frugal.

Be back to see the Kobies toy with the Heat later.

Posted by Master Ace 12/25/2010 at 09:52 AM

Crybaby Fed/Puny Server Rafa Fan,
Yes, that is Eastern Standard Time.

"Churros" is not just typical in Madrid but in all around Spain and more at north where they are the best, I miss them!!!

Today Wade and his team against Lakers. Maybe Wade is not going to play because his knee but I'm sure the rest of the team can do something good
I can see that NP likes the classic music but "maybe" he likes this one too LOL

A Merry Christmas, seasons greetings to Jackie and everyone.

I have no idea what time this party will be my time in Melbourne. Hope I can join for a little bit.

Here, it's now Boxing day, time for a, hopefully, gripping cricket Ashes Test match at the MCG, and time for the beach and movies - I recently saw "The King's Speech", which is terrific and maybe will garner an Oscar, though as a non US film I'm not sure how that works.

Posted by NP 12/25/2010 at 06:27 PM

The Kobies are being generous as expected. Way too generous!

On a more serious note, Kobe looks uptight. Dunno what's up with him these days, last time he got thrown out for getting 2 technicals and he just got another one today. Hopefully this is just temporary.

Posted by NP 12/25/2010 at 06:54 PM

Artest is being a major dumbass this evening, even by his standards.

Posted by sf 12/25/2010 at 07:18 PM

np,

the whole lakers crew is sucking like hail. i don't care if the heat are playing so-called great defense - "plug that darn hole!" while, i must say, i could care less if they lost this game tonight, i just don't like the vibe and hype this would give the tottering heat. sometimes, even in sports, "perception (can be) everything."

merry christmas, btw.

Posted by NP 12/25/2010 at 07:30 PM

sf, same 2 U.

Yeah, according to Van Gundy the only reason the Kobies are sucking is 'cause of the Miami defense. I'm still waiting to see the Heat end up with 73 wins. :)

And I repeat, Kobe is really uptight. I'm not just talking about his TO, BTW, but also his movement without the ball. Maybe age is finally taking its toll on him.

Posted by NP 12/25/2010 at 07:39 PM

The dumbass commies are still without a clue. The Heat are "dominating" because their opposition has been crap for the last couple of weeks. Expect these know-nothings to eat crow again at the end of the season.

Posted by sf 12/25/2010 at 07:43 PM

np,

i'm with you about the commies. they suck to high heavens, it's amazing how quickly they forget! hello, this is back-2-back champs!

anyhoo, kobe may not be all there, but methinks the lakers have a christmas day curse - we never seem to do well on this holiday.

Posted by sf 12/25/2010 at 07:48 PM

so it ends 96-80. pffttt.

Posted by NP 12/25/2010 at 07:49 PM

sf, what worries me is that last season Kobe was playing awfully well before his injury. This season, OTOH, has been consistently mediocre for him. Maybe Kobe is saving himself for the postseason, like the Celtics last yr. At least I hope so.

And yes, this is just another reason why Christmas is my least favorite holiday. :)

Posted by sf 12/25/2010 at 07:53 PM

the whole lakers crew seemed downcast today, it's weird. no energy. whatever little energy we had was nervous energy. so many near misses -

pau's usually soft hands deserted him under the rim today.
artest could not even control balls without a tackle (ala when he kneed a ball and dived into the miami bench trying to retrieve it).
kobe was ho-hum.

sigh.

Posted by Jackie 12/25/2010 at 07:56 PM

Here to say another MERRY CHRISTMAS! to all those who celebrate it. Hope it's been warm, relaxing, wondrous. :)

Posted by NP 12/25/2010 at 07:56 PM

sf, the Kobies were being especially generous. You know, the Christmas crap and all that.

Posted by sf 12/25/2010 at 07:59 PM

np, re: kobe. i think i agree with you. knowing him and his pedigree and what's been able to accomplish, i think he's saving himself. dude is too smart to just be playing to lose (or just for the sake of playing) - there must be a method to this madness.

you'll recall how we wondered about him not doing his surgery over the summer in the off-season. he must know something we don't. at least I hope we're right.

all i ask is a 3-peat, is that too much to ask? ;)

Posted by NP 12/25/2010 at 08:00 PM

Jax, it's been pretty quiet around here today. Anyhoo hope you've had a good one.

Posted by sf 12/25/2010 at 08:02 PM

np, you are a good trooper - never despair in the face of defeat, eh? love that.

hello jackie, happy bday to your mom, and a merry christmas to you, too!

Posted by NP 12/25/2010 at 08:03 PM

sf, if there's one thing I learned from the last season, it's that the regular season don't mean much. I just hope Kobe will be back to his usual level once the playoffs kick off. The Celtics will be tougher this time around.

Posted by Master Ace 12/25/2010 at 08:04 PM

NP and SF,
Lakers quit in the 4th quarter as there were no spark from them. Gasol and Odom failed big time to dominate the Heat weakness inside. However, give Heat credit for executing their game plan.

Posted by Jackie 12/25/2010 at 08:07 PM

NP, no kidding. Hope things pick up once the party rolls around!

sf, thank you!! (Mom thanks you too. :)) Are you having a good one, bball notwithstanding?

Posted by NP 12/25/2010 at 08:14 PM

MA, I hear ya. Even the dumbass commies should've noticed that Bosh had only 2 RBs today.

Jax, is X-mas your mom's b-day? Does that mean you have to get her 2 presents every yr? Ouch!

Posted by sf 12/25/2010 at 08:14 PM

np,
for repeat champs (like the lakers, celtics), a sub-par regular season should never be used as a yardstick. they have proved over and over that they can produce results when it really, really counts. so i'm not too concerned. i only hope that they learned something tonight that they can use when push comes to shove in the play-offs. i bet phil jackson did.

jackie,
thanks again. nice christmas i'm having, with friends and family, eating like crazy. lol, but true.

Posted by sf 12/25/2010 at 08:20 PM

master ace!

thanks for the christmas wishes upstream and your insights on the heat-lakers game. i totally agree that the lakers simply gave up after their initial push at the start of the 2nd half was rebuffed by the heat. i am convincing myself, though, that this is a ploy by the lakers to lure the heat into complacency should we clash in the nba finals! lol, but it's my kind of survivalist thinking!

Posted by NP 12/25/2010 at 08:39 PM

Guys, my Internet is failing me atm, so I'll have to bid adieu. Have fun for the rest of the weekend. Try not to overindulge. :)

Later.

Posted by Jackie 12/25/2010 at 08:48 PM

OOPS, ran away. NP, Mom's b-day was yesterday. And silly, we get her more than 2 gifts. ;)

Posted by sf 12/25/2010 at 08:53 PM

good night, np, i'll try to heed your advise. NOT! :) tis that season.

Posted by sf 12/25/2010 at 08:59 PM

good girl, jackie, for not cheating your our mom out of her special day. b'days like hers get cheated all the time.

Posted by sf 12/25/2010 at 09:49 PM

hey np,

if u read this later...

i was just listening to a clip of kobe's post-game interview and he says "we always suck on christmas" we don't have the meanness to go all out on that particular day. then he makes a key point: let's get something straight, this match was more important to them than to us. people shouldn't read too much into it; but i don't like our lack of effort, energy, etc., i just don't like it.

same thing we were saying, bro.

man, we should get paid for our views on games - lol.

Posted by Aussiemarg, 12/26/2010 at 01:07 AM

Hi Miss Jackie

Hopefully I wont be too "jet lagged" and will be here for the Party!

Had a traditional Christmas with Midnight Mass and food and more food.

NP and SF

Hmmmm we lost again? maybe the Lakers need a coursr of Vitamen Pills? I am not happy at all.pfft.

Some quick Aussie news if I may which I received by email

Marino Matosevic received a w/card into the Brisbane International.He will have a precautionary x ray on his hip which was tight in the recent play offs in Melbourne.He thinks it was tight because he was not playing matches since early November.

Good news for Aussie posters.Fox Sports pay tv will broadcast the AO 2011 after entering a new agreement with Tennis Australia and the Seven network to provide a live and extensive coverage of the first GS of the year.

The new agreement,to commence includes live rights for all matches on televised courts,apart from Rod Laver arena,between day 1 and day 8 of the tournament.

Fox Sports also has the right to replay all Rod Laver Arena matches as well as all the action from the q/finals onwards.Great News for all of us Fox Pay tc subscribers.Good to see channel 7 hasnnt got the monopoly on the AO 2011.

I think Aussie cricketers think this is a one day match not a series in Melbourne.Woeful as I look at the scores.Unless it rains England will retain the Ashes easy and well deserved too.

and 6 days for a new year!!!!

happy new year in advance!!!

Posted by beth 12/26/2010 at 12:34 PM

well , tis the day after Christmas and my house is a mess
but we had a great day with family
I have to wish you all a belated Merry Christmas and hope you had a great day
I do plan on being around for the holiday party
Thanks for hosting as always, Pete and Jackie!

as for the Lakers - yes , they stunk it up
Word is around these parts , that the Lakers do not want to play ( work ) on Christmas Day
Jackson, Kobe et al , would rather be at home with their families like the rest of the world
So maybe they were staging a little mini protest to the network

"you gonna make us work - well we will show you - the game will stink and so will your ratings - Ha "
or something like that . I don't know for sure
All I do know is that Pau Gasol could not have hit water if he fell out of a boat yesterday
and the rest of the team did not look much better
and what in the world was with those hideous green shoes ?

Posted by sf 12/26/2010 at 02:19 PM

@beth,
thanks for the "inside info" on the lakers. i feel so much better, lol.
merry christmas to you and yours, too. and thank gawd for moms, who would clean after us without them, eh? ;)

@am,
don't despair, fellow lakers fan. it is all a conspiracy - we will hit 'em where it hurts later.
so, as far as the ao wildcards go, i hope that guy who feigned injury to avoid the qualies doesn't get one, but what do i know!

Posted by gliciouss 12/26/2010 at 02:42 PM

hey everyone...
a bit random...but is there a site that has all the md and QUALIFIER entry lists for upcoming events??? i know the lists must exist...they don't seem to be easy to find

oi vey, zenggi! merry belated merry christmas to you, sweetheart!

close your eyes. make a wish. from your heart to gawd's ears. i hope 2011 brings you (and your roger) the very best too.

feliz navidad, ahhhh sumptious tune, traditional as it is contemporary! talking of which, a friend sent me a really, really neat e-christmas card, interactive to the point where you click through to building a very nice christmas village. it's a powerpoint attachment in an email, and after downloading it, i am having a hard time copying/pasting it into this typepad space. any hint how to do this, so i can share this beauty with all? if not, no worries, there are many youtube yuletide improvisations to last one a lifetime.

Hey everyone. :) Hope you all had lovely Christmases.

am late, but I don't like missing DCs, so - Christmas Eve is usually spent doing all the stuff I left to the last minute which is pretty much everything. :) I prefer it that way generally; somehow doesn't feel like magic if you start things like tree-decorating too early in the month. :)

Can't arrive at a party without bringing a contribution. :)

Thank you all for giving the Colts some of your love (as I requested). They won. Only 21 more days until the Aus. Open. Yippeee

Merry Christmas to all, had a really great Christmas, one of the best, but now I'm completely snowed in with 12ft and climbing, the road are also closed but it looks pretty.

beth at 12:34 PM "as for the Lakers - yes , they stunk it up Word is around these parts , that the Lakers do not want to play ( work ) on Christmas Day. Jackson, Kobe et al , would rather be at home with their families like the rest of the world So maybe they were staging a little mini protest to the network"

~~~~~~~~~
Somehow I can't feel too sorry for Jackson and Kobe et al who each earned several hundreds of thousand dollars to show up for a few hours. It's the parking lot attendants and hot dog vendors and arena janitors et al who I've got the most sympathy for. Although maybe they were glad of the chance to earn $50 or so.
To our European friends, how are the airports and highways and whatnot? Were people finally able to get to where they were trying to go for Christmas? The US northeast is really getting slammed right now. Boy this has sure been a tough travel season for a lot of people.
Good for us but I can't help but feel some sympathy for Rafa and Roger. They haven't had much of a break at all. They're both doing an autograph signing this Thursday at Abu Dhabi so it all starts already for them. Click on activity schedule here: http://www.mubadalawtc.com/en/home.aspx
iB3 is airing a prime time special on Rafa and his amazing year tonight. This promo is in Mallorqui but the video is kind of interesting if only to see him a little worked up at a practice session. At Toni? An irate Rafa is kind of sexy! :D http://ib3noticies.com/20101226_128525-rafel-nadal-sha-superat.html
Jackson,
2011 season should start shortly. Speaking of Nadal and Federer, I would think they have completed their off season workouts. After AO, both guys are not scheduled to play again until Federer in Dubai and Nadal in Davis Cup action.
A belated "Merry Christmas" to all my TW friends. I'm looking forward to the party this Friday.
Marie, good to see you! It's been a while. Hope you are well. :)
Lennon 1980, glad the Colts came through for you. Equally glad the Jags gagged for you too. :)
Master Ace, are you ready for bowl season to get serious? :)
And happy birthday to one of our special posters here. He he. :)
Posted by Master Ace 12/27/2010 at 11:56 AM
Sherlock,
As you know the SEC "season" do not start until Dec 30 and hopefully, the games will be pretty good.
WTA Roadmap Bonus Money for 2011 if the players met the requirement
Caroline - 1,000,000
Vera - 800,000
Kim - 700,000
Serena - 500,000
Venus - 500,000
Samantha - 400,000
Francesca - 250,000
Jelena - 250,000
Victoria - 250,000
Na - 250,000
Posted by Sherlock 12/27/2010 at 01:23 PM
MA, I don't mind if the SEC wins every game up to January 10th, as long as the Ducks win that day. :)
Posted by Master Ace 12/27/2010 at 01:38 PM
Sherlock,
That day is doomsday for the Ducks as his pushups will be limited. Newton will lead the Tigers to the BCS Championship.
Posted by Sherlock 12/27/2010 at 01:40 PM
Blasphemy, my friend. :)
But sadly, probably accurate. That's ok, though, I'm not giving up hope. :)
Wish jewell a very happy birthday if you haven't already, guys!
Sherls, the party's on Thursday! Don't come the day after - then you'll be stuck with clean-up duties. :)
Posted by Master Ace 12/27/2010 at 03:10 PM
Happy Birthday, Jewell.
Posted by Sherlock 12/27/2010 at 03:30 PM
Doh!! Thanks, Jax! That would be just like me. :)
Hope you had a very nice Christmas, Jackie. :)
And now that the cat is out of the bag, yes, happy birthday to our wonderful Jewell. Hope you have a great day. :)
Posted by Sherlock 12/27/2010 at 03:31 PM
Off to watch some basketball on my day off. Have a great day, gang. :)
Posted by Holds2Love 12/27/2010 at 03:33 PM
Hope you are having a wonderful birthday, jewell! Hello to Master Ace, Jackie, Sherlock and anyone else about. I hope Amit made it to Paris and I hope no Twibe members are being inconvenienced by the snow storm on the east coast of the U.S.
Posted by Ruth 12/27/2010 at 03:36 PM
Happy, Happy Birthday, jewell! And many happy returns of the day to you!
jackson: If I were going to feel sorry for one or the other of those two groups of players you mentioned @9:29 am, I'd probably pick the Lakers who have a "mandatory" Christmas Day assignment over Roger and Rafa and their welcome, but definitely voluntary, exo/tourney in Abu Dhabi! :)
P.S. - Sania is scheduled to make her comeback from injury
happy birthday jewell... so you double the presents in one week ;) lucky you !
sherlock, hi yes i'm doing fine... just haveing a break holyday, very much needed after the epic snow delays at my favorite airport :)
i don't know if any triber had someone stuck in an european airport, but the worst part after having so much people on the ground, now thousands of luggage are left over... i'm grateful i don't work in that department !
so when tennis is starting ? the good thing of the off season it's that you become eager to watch some tennis, no matter who's playing ;)
the one i really want to watch is del potro... it's just been too long !
master ace, acording to dinara twitter she was stuch in the transit area of santiago airport cause no visa to go out for an hotel... she's travelling alone, she board this morning for a 13hour fligh going east ! rough life sometimes ;)
