Gone Fishin', Stay Awhile 02/19/2012 - 8:59 AM

Nica

Howdy, everyone. I just wanted to drop by to say I'm away on family vacation as of Monday, for all of next week. I will be blissfully out of touch with the Internet, cell phone, tablet, cable box, etc. etc. The only electronic device going with my is my personal library, aka Kindle.

It's Cowboy Luke's winter break, and once again we're heading for Central America, where we'll rent a truck and knock around Nicaragua - although my wife Lisa once again did a terrific job scoping out great if quiet and out of the way little places to stay. I think we start out on some volcanic islands in Lake Nicaragua, and end up somewhere on the southwest (Pacific) coast.

For those of you who like to gather here, this page will be refreshed or replaced with another post on a daily basis. And at the end of the week, Bobby Chintapalli, who will be in Memphis (all you WTA fans ought to be thrilled about that) for the last few days of that tournament, will be posting here. Have a great week, everyone.

- Pete

Well well well

I return, turn on the TV and guess who's just won a tournament?
Yup, Roger. Once again my absence from this site has proved golden for
the Creamy bastard. He's clearly doing this just to piss me off.
As always it's all about me. Even when it's not about me at all.

6-1 in the first set? Look forward to a replay of this one.

Commies to Ms Wilks. Congrats to zenggi. Congrats to LadyJulia
who scoffed at my superstition.

Me? I was playing golf, getting blasted, writing words, having lots
of laughs and trying to get laid. I was fighting "the good fight."

Fishing? You bet.......................................

Posted by CWATC 02/19/2012 at 09:59 AM

Wow, this Fed reminds me a bit of a player I used to know; plays like crap in match after match; then flips the switch in the final -
Nice to see you again!

Posted by chegu 02/19/2012 at 10:04 AM

BP, welcome back:-)

Posted by amant de tennis 02/19/2012 at 10:05 AM

For the last year or so I have never watched a Fed match live. Whenever I watch, he plays badly for sure. I enjoy replays of his wins with peace of mind. Yes, I am very superstitious and a deist.

" And at the end of the week, Bobby Chinatapalli, who will be in Charleston (all you WTA fans ought to be thrilled about that) for the last few days of that tournament, will be posting here."

TWibe,
That probably reads Memphis this week where it is a mixed event which main draw action starts today for WTA.

Good to see you

Roger was just a pleasure to watch today

I did get up at Midnight by the way to watch the mens final

Though I didnt mind a bit when watching Roger produce so much variety in his game...as a tennis fan cant ask for more.

Victoria Azarenka won the toss and elected to received against Samantha Stosur, who made the coin toss call.

Vika, please make at least one of my predictions come true, I'm 0/4 so far :-))

Davai, Vika!

Posted by Banana Peel (La Nocturne de Plume) 02/19/2012 at 10:11 AM

Hi Chegu

I totally avoided all things tennis this week. Walk thru the door
at 6:00 am and immediately think, "Well, Roger played this week, let's
find out how badly he did." Turn on TC and there he is smiling. A
winner once again. Delpo seems to inspire him. That and my absences
from this site. Bastard!

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,I Wont Be Taking Any Prisoners In 2012! 02/19/2012 at 10:11 AM

As I did post earlier

I just hope Vika's ankle will be okay.I would hate to see her injured at this start of the season....since she has been playing soo well.

Just seen that poor Robin Soderling is afraid that his career might be over because of the mono .... he says he's making progress but it's at a snail's pace. Jgoes to show how fragile an athlete's career is. Robin gave an interview to one of the Swedish newspapers - I'm sorry I don't know how to post the link.

Think I'll watch Sam and the new No 1.
So Roger looked good? I see Daveydenko took
a set off him. Glad I didn't see that.

Nuts....do I hang here for Roger's next tourney?

I'm bad luck when I do and good luck when I don't.

Sad to hear that news with Robin....though it dosent suprise me in the least.Having mono myself it usually takes 6 months to recover and seeing its well over that time period and all.I suspect Robin has CFS.

Roger was just 'on' in his match and brought it all for the final as champion players do:)

Posted by Caroline 02/19/2012 at 10:23 AM

Isn't it sad, AM. You would know far more than I about CFS, but Robin would be past the peak of his career anyway and it would be so hard to get back. Very different for Juan Martin after his wrist injury because he was so young.

recent news re petkovic and söderling are about as un-encouraging as possible.
zero progress for petko, now in holiday til end of february cause there is nothing else she can do.
and söderling for the first time admits to the possibility that just maybe maybe maybe he might never quite get right enough to play top ball again.
says he's making progress but it's so slow that it might as well be no progress at all.

more cheerfully, hingis in attendance in doha today again and looking every bit like the tennis royalty she is.

Did i ever mention to anyone how completely frustratingly unreliable technology is, even when i've spent $700 on a new laptop.

The rain has stopped, but still my wireless connection only hangs about for 12mins at a time. I get snatches of games, followed 20mins of trying to get connection up again.

It's enough to send a girl to bed! Uh-oh, see what happens, Sam's down a break already! What to do now? Do i chase after another stream that'll work for 10mins, or do i just go for the written commentry. And how to make such a choice at this hour of the morning???

so far this is going like every vika-stosur match.
vika's return more than neutralises the stosur serve. and once she's done that she takes stosur's ground game apart.

Vika with a SP

Posted by jodiecate: sleep? who needs sleep??? 02/19/2012 at 10:45 AM

Well, on the plus side, Sam usually plays better when she loses the first set. When she wins the first she often goes down in the second. Nowhere down to go here - so can only go up. :)

Posted by H2L 02/19/2012 at 10:46 AM

hey, Caroline :)) sorry, I was making tea. wow this match is going quickly. yes, I agree with what you posted at the end of the last thread, this is a nice win following the 'debacle' of last weekend, lol. Still, I very much want to see JMDP take a title soon, he could do with a confidence boost, as well. I admit, after yesterday, I wasn't sure Fed would take it today and as you said, he wasn't getting many easy points with his serve. So good thing his ground game was there and he wasn't making all the errors he had yesterday.

Vika's ankle is apparently ok. but horrible news about Soderling and Petko. I hope it's not career ending for Soderling, but from where he is right now, it's easy to see how he could become discouraged :(

Damn

Pete writes a Nadal satire (Vamos Syndrome) and I missed it.
I could've brought my "I think Rafa's gay" material back out of the
closet I retired it to. I could've really spelled it all out.

I could've written fantasies that Rafa has about Deliciano.
All sorts of scenes where Lopez is continually embarrassed by
Rafa's puppy dog perseverence.....Uncle Toni scrambling furiously
to keep a lid on the story. Rafa's shill girlfriend hitting on
Feliciano just to drive Rafa crazy. Feliciano licking her face
in front of Rafa just to see what kind of reaction he'll get.

Would've been fun, unlike this boring match..................

in that last service game of hers stosur made 5 out of 6 first serves.
1 was an ace. the other four times vika returned it deep and eventually (sometimes outright) won the point.

not many bigger 'mares on the wta tour for stosur than playing vs vika.

No cables in this street i guess, or the ones close by. It's an outrage!

As i can't see the match, i'm curious, did Sam really celebrate winning that game. Did she smile & stuff, or is it just all to seriously dreadful for her?

and given the depressing news about Soderling (and Ancic before him), i hope some keep the Fed mono eyerolls in perspective, its an incredibly tricky condition and it can ruin a career, Fed got lukcy, sounds like Robin, not so much..he's still kinda young I hope he can come back

Wow, how much better can a Sunday get!?; sausage and pancakes for breakfast, a Federwin over a top opponent and Downton Abbey and martinis to look forward to. :-) Me happy.

I know there is live tennis going on so this will be brief...also, auto 'energy save' turned the satellite off so I missed the first 5 games of the match, which I gather, were rather good from TMG. More cogent, yet silly analysis later. From what I saw, Roger played just a VERY smart match. Setting the agenda and refusing to let The Ent do what the Ent does so well. It is where his variety and shot making skills pay the biggest dividends. He must have been sore today and since his serve wasn't on, he made sure that everything else was. Now, if we could just get them to close the roof in all his Wimby and AO matches, the Indoor King could and would reign there as well. ;-))

(Anyone think that he might pull out of Dubai? )
