Kudos, USA 02/12/2012 - 11:48 AM

Pic
Howdy. I've been knocked back by an odd flu-like ailment for a few days, but I wanted to refresh the page and offer you a new gathering place for discussion. And how about that job by team USA in Switzerland? Late Friday, we were trying to sort out how to handle a potentially Super Sunday in Fribourg, coverage-wise, when it occurred to me that we may not even have to deal with that kind of a problem.

After all, the U.S. had a number of interesting doubles options, and while Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka have won Olympic doubles gold, neither of them has the vast doubles experience of a Mike Bryan. The decision to hold Ryan Harrison, much as it might have steamed young Ryan, was a wise if risky one. It paid off and resulted in a clean sweep, 3-0.

I'll have some thoughts on that tie tomorrow, and perhaps look at some of the other results produced in this unpredictable Davis Cup weekend. Now, though, I'm just going to crawl back into bed. Feel free to continue your ongoing discussions here, or to start new ones, below.

-- Pete

Marion at the ceremony: The tears are really flowing, she's so disappointed. But a huge cheer from the French crowd. Also for Angelique.

"Congrats Angy, I'm sure we'll have some more great matches in the future."

French

"It was wonderful having Monica Seles in the crowd, I grew up with her as my hero. And thank you all for supporting me so wonderfully this week."

The usual Oscar-like thank yous from Angelique.

oh crap ...or merde...too bad about the Maid. Would have been nice for her to win at home. I did think that perhaps she had been dipping into the candy dish a little too much lately. Not that she will ever be 'svelte' but she looked fitter at the end of last year.

The only thing that surprised me about today's USA pasting of Switz. is that Michale Lammer managed to take Ryan's Hope to 2 TBs. I have seen Lammer play a couple of times and Harrison 3 or 4 now, and Mr. Lammer, you are no Ryan Harrison.

___ Bless America? Why? What has America done for___lately?

Get well soon , Pete!
And USA! USA! I am so happy for the team. After personally witnessing that kick in the gut that was the tie vs Spain in Austin - I am so happy for this team and Captain Courier . This will be a confidence builder , I am sure

now to Canada / France. So sorry that Raonic is injured again. He does look like one of those guys who is always going to be injured. What a shame. I often wonder with these super tall players - like Raonic and Monfils who seem to have knee issues , if Osgood Schlatter's syndrome has anything to do with it . ( knee pain caused by over use / rapid growth in adolescence ) Not much that can be done about it that I know of .

Told you kids about Raonic & injury.

Kobe clutch again! Still not happy about his shoot %, but a win is a win. Now if he can only avoid having to rescue his team....

Also, finally visited Scott (& Zelda) Fitzgerald's grave yesterday (at St. Mary's in Rockville). You know what they say about travel in local areas; if anything you have to make even more effort to visit nearby attractions.

That was on my way to meeting with a friend who's about to start his own business as a prop trader. I told him he's more Nick Carraway than Gatsby, which had just about as much effect as I expected.

Jeepers Popsicle is gorgeous. What eyes *swoons*

But the Canuck captain's decision to have Milos in doubles didn't pay off. Frank Dancevic is about 5 years removed from his peak play.

Posted by JJ... 02/12/2012 at 08:50 PM

Looks like a great year for Women's tennis. The top 3 all have GS titles... Now if Kvitova can heal up soon it will shape up for a fine spring.

Anyone know if Clijsters is going to defend all those points she has coming up? Otherwise she could be falling into Venus territory soon.

Posted by Del Pony 02/12/2012 at 08:50 PM

How did Monfils ever lose to that Kazakh guy at the AO? He has so much raw talent.

Posted by Northernboy 02/12/2012 at 08:54 PM

@Del Pony - he played the entire match just like this one, goofing off and generally not taking anything seriously.

Posted by Del Pony 02/12/2012 at 08:57 PM

So who will win Rotterdam ATP 500? Hoping for Pony (of course) but wouldn't be too upset if T-Berd won the whole thing. It looks like it's going to be a big year for T-Berd. I expect big things from him at RG this year, he could definitely take out Murray and make the SF (he's done it before). To be honest, he could probably take out any of the Top 4 in the QF, except maybe Rafa.

Posted by Rochester 02/12/2012 at 08:58 PM

I am looking forward for the Americans to make a move in the French this year. Granted it won't be at the same level of altitude as in Fribourg and it won't play as fast. But this win should give the boys confidence. What American male do you think is our best shot at Paris?

Posted by JJ... 02/12/2012 at 09:00 PM

No one can take Monfils seriously because he doesn't take himself seriously.

Posted by Del Pony 02/12/2012 at 09:03 PM

I think you gotta go with Isner as the last American male standing in Paris. He's kinda like the male Sam Stosur: great kick serve, great forehand, showed some amazing touch at the net as well (though Sam is probably a better "pure" volleyer than Isner). The only problem with Isner is his tendency to get into dogfights with lower-ranked players in the first few rounds. If he's relatively fresh heading into the fourth round, I think he's got a great chance at knocking out a top seed and reaching the QF. He probably won't beat Rafa, Djoker, or Feds, but I could see him taking out Murray, Ferrer, or Fish in the 4th round. It all depends on his seeding by the time the French rolls around (9-12 or 13-16) which guy he draws in the 4th round, of course.

Posted by JJ... 02/12/2012 at 09:04 PM

@Rochester... How about Courier trading in his suit and grabbing a racquet?

Posted by Rochester 02/12/2012 at 09:05 PM

I agree with JJ, Monfils will make highlight reels but will never win big titles. However, the game needs a fun personality like Gael. I'm surprised he isn't a Lacoste guy like most of the French guys. I've always loved Gael, he has had some fun matches. THe match against Kendrick at the US Open, Fognini at the French was another classic. It's hard not to like him.

Posted by Del Pony 02/12/2012 at 09:05 PM

Courier was such a great team captain this weekend. I was impressed. Contrast him with Shamil Tarpischev (whom everyone thinks is such a "genius"). Putting in Bogie against Melzer, considering the H2H? Picking Kunitsyn over Davydenko for singles? What the....

Posted by MagicVilas 02/12/2012 at 09:34 PM

So, did they ever review overnight video to see if Isner was digging holes in the clay at 3:00am?

Posted by Rochester 02/12/2012 at 09:48 PM

@JJ sadly I think you are right. Courier likes to grind on clay. I don't think the other Americans do. I can see John Isner making a run. I actually think Isner is a better clay courter than a grass court player. He has enough time to set up for his shots.

Mardy gets too negative I think on the big stage. He doesn't have that fire in him and he is too self-deprecating. I would like to see him be a little more brash and say "i'm not gonna take this".

I think Robbie Ginepri would be a great clay court player if only he stayed healthy. He beat Juan Carlos Ferrero and made the 4th round at Roland Garros. But he is too inconsistent.

Posted by Rochester 02/12/2012 at 09:49 PM

Does anyone know what Roddick's ranking can fall to if he doesn't defend Memphis? Could he be unseeded by Roland Garros if he doesn't win? The only other result he has to defend is the quarters at the US Open.

LOL, Bissy. Dan Evans - Davis Cup hero. :) *showers him with gold stars* *makes sure Hutchins/Fleming get some too* Cronin said on Twitter that the British journalists were celebrating as if Evans had just won Wimbledon. :)

I don't even know Adele or her music but always happy when someone who went down on one's path gets back up,climbs up the curb and perform as nothing ever happened, great story! looking for my Vee to do the same in tennis!

Whenever I get to Target this week I'm getting her CD,just awesome achievments!

Get well soon Pete. The US men are in a lot better shape than the women.

@ Del Pony, @ Northernboy

Did anyone actually watch the Monfils match? He was INJURED! He was hobbling around the court for the first two sets. He took some pills and started loosening up, but what's amazing is that it still took Kukushkin 5 sets to defeat him. I've heard Tignor criticize Monfils' performance too. I can only guess that he didn't watch the match either.

I'm not defending Le Monf in all situations. He does seem to lack fire often, but this was not an example of that.

@Rochester--regarding Andy's ranking. The Memphis tournament is one week later this year and unless Andy makes the final in San Jose, he losses 500 pts this coming Monday. He has 90 pts at Indian Wells + 10 each from Miami, Madrid, and Rome to defend. He will probably be ranked # 30 or so Monday, but if he can do well at the 5 tournaments mentioned, he should be ranked at French and Wimbledon.
