Your Call, From Memphis 02/24/2012 - 8:00 AM

MEMPHIS–I got to Memphis a few hours later than planned but just in time to see Sergiy Stakhovsky hit an underhand serve against Milos Raonic. It came out of nowhere, and you could hear the it-came-out-of-nowhereness in the collective gasp from the few fans still out on the stadium late Thursday night. It’s the first time I’ve seen an underhand serve live.

And the first time in months I’ve seen live tennis, so I went through my usual assortment of feelings, remembering that, oh yeah, this isn’t the same sport I play at the Chicago public courts across the street and, oh wow, how are they doing that, and that, and that! I like feeling that excitement anew and feeling that newness again. It didn’t last long though. A few games later Raonic wrapped up the match 6-4, 6-4 to make the quarterfinals.

I made my way out, past melodic accents that never get old, past a thirtysomething man reminding the older woman beside him that Raonic is “still just a man” and past still-baby-faced Raonic patiently smiling for pictures on his way back to the player area that's a two-minute walk away. It was late, though you can easily forget that here at The Racquet Club of Memphis, with its big-and-fancy-high-school-gym feel and indoor lighting that highlights the tennis but hides the time.

Much of this is to say, I didn’t watch much tennis today, but I’m here and will watch more over the next few days. I’ll be following up on a few other things, but I expect to write a TennisWorld post or two. Now if you’d like to discuss the day’s matches or other goings-on, go right ahead.

Second!

H2H between JJ and ARad is 1-1 with ARad winning the most recent one last autumn.

C'mon, JJ.

Posted by Aube, thing is to coax your mind not to think of anything,casse-tete! 02/24/2012 at 08:10 AM

have fun in Memphis Bobby and keep the writings coming as I know they're going to be interesting, thank you!

now for the underhand serve I always wonder why players don't do it more in pressure points like deuces or break points when everyone else is expecting a big serve wondering about the placement?!

it certainly takes players aback...

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/24/2012 at 08:12 AM

Nice get & pass DTL from JJ for 30-40 but ARad holds, 1-0.

Thanks, Bobby, for the call post. Hope you have a great time in Memphis & write lots about it. :)

Posted by Euris From D.R 02/24/2012 at 08:13 AM

hope JJ will be missin return after such a great return yesterday

Posted by Aube, thing is to coax your mind not to think of anything,casse-tete! 02/24/2012 at 08:13 AM

Like I said in the other thread I like JJ's chances a lot

is your headache gone jewell, saw you had one previously?hopes so!

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/24/2012 at 08:14 AM

Great return at JJ's feet and right on the baseline.

Posted by Aube, thing is to coax your mind not to think of anything,casse-tete! 02/24/2012 at 08:15 AM

mice pass by Radwanska!

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/24/2012 at 08:17 AM

Nice pass from ARad and she has two BPs. 2nd serve, lovely point from JJ saves one - deep into each corner, gets short ball, hammers it away for a winner. 30-40. But JJ can't save the next one and hits into the net. 2-0 to Aggie.

The ibuprofen worked nicely, Aube, thanks. Just a morning headache.

Posted by Aube, thing is to coax your mind not to think of anything,casse-tete! 02/24/2012 at 08:17 AM

broken already is JJ,take it back JJ make it a tight set...

Posted by manixdk - Caro: is she starting to find her game? 02/24/2012 at 08:19 AM

The challenge for JJ is not to think that she has to make the perfect shot every time. Agy and Caro will make you think that. Because you do pretty well, but you have to put it out of your mind and play your game.

Posted by Aube, thing is to coax your mind not to think of anything,casse-tete! 02/24/2012 at 08:19 AM

Great jewell and you welcome...

Euris looks like your wish of JJ making erros in the return is making way, hum!

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/24/2012 at 08:20 AM

Some really fun points in this game.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/24/2012 at 08:21 AM

BH DTL winner brings JJ a BP. And a second one takes it for her. Back on serve!

Tsonga-Vaseline on my other TV

Good morning everyone !

JJ seems off to a shaky start ... and I'm afraid I don't like that pink panel on the side of her dress.

Posted by Claire 02/24/2012 at 08:22 AM

Hello people

This looks like an enjoyable match. I'm obviously hoping for a JJ win.

Posted by Euris From D.R 02/24/2012 at 08:22 AM

I'm seeing glances of JJ of 2008 on both wings...

She used to kill Serebaby with those, hum welcome back JJ,if you do more of those you'll win

back to serve!

Posted by Aube, thing is to coax your mind not to think of anything,casse-tete! 02/24/2012 at 08:25 AM

Hi Lynne manixdk and Claire,
Indeed Jj is showing some stings...

Posted by Euris From D.R 02/24/2012 at 08:26 AM

JJ not serving still well

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/24/2012 at 08:28 AM

First serves would be nice, JJ. BP for A-Rad - fine, don't listen, Jelena - 2nd serve, Aggie gets a good JJ BH back, JJ into the net. Aggie breaks for 3-1.

Posted by Aube, thing is to coax your mind not to think of anything,casse-tete! 02/24/2012 at 08:28 AM

ok maybe instead of breakfast I'll eat a break-fest,really girls one of you holds please!

Posted by manixdk - Caro: is she starting to find her game? 02/24/2012 at 08:29 AM

JJ has to be patient.

Posted by Lynne (Rafalite) 02/24/2012 at 08:29 AM

Hey, Aube,

I love the way JJ can change the direction of the ball.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/24/2012 at 08:30 AM

Nice challenge, JJ.

Posted by Aube, thing is to coax your mind not to think of anything,casse-tete! 02/24/2012 at 08:30 AM

right challenge JJ,how did you see that?

Posted by Aube, thing is to coax your mind not to think of anything,casse-tete! 02/24/2012 at 08:33 AM

now I want to know what's up?what is Asderaki saying to them?

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/24/2012 at 08:33 AM

Great hitting from JJ brings up a BP, saved by Aggie.

Both women went to talk to the umpire, not sure what that's about, but expect Aggie will tell us in one of next week's pressers.

Posted by Claire 02/24/2012 at 08:34 AM

Quick, someone needs to stick some money in the meter and get the electric back on.

Posted by Cotton Jack 02/24/2012 at 08:34 AM

I posted this about Albano Olivetti, Fish's vanquisher, at the end of the last thread, but since it took me a moment or two to look up the stats I'm going to post it here too ;-)

His first tournament was a Futures in Oct 2008. Between then and September 2010 he never won more than one match in a tournament, his record in Futures etc 6-20. In September 2010 he won a futures tournament.

In 2011 his record in Futures was 4 QFs, 5 SFs and 2 Fs in Futures, and qualified for 3 Challengers. At the third of these, the Geneva Challenger, he won his first round match, against Dusan Lajovic (top 200).

In 2012 he's reached a Futures SF and then qualified for the Bergamo Challenger, where he lost in the first round.

So up to this tournament all he has:
1-2 record in the finals of Futures
1-4 record in Challengers

To qualify for Marseille he beat three Frenchmen Vaisse, Ouanna and Jouan. These were his first victories in Tour-level qualifiers. Ouanna and Jouan are both ranked much higher than him.

In the 1st round he beat Bachinger (top 100) and 2nd round Fish (top 10)

To the extent that anyone can come from nowhere, Olivetti has definitely done it

Posted by manixdk - Caro: is she starting to find her game? 02/24/2012 at 08:34 AM

Aube

There's a power failure, so no Hawkeye. The Eurosport transmission is on a separate generator, so we can see a picture. Asderaki has to yell out points.

Posted by Aube, thing is to coax your mind not to think of anything,casse-tete! 02/24/2012 at 08:35 AM

yeah a hold

indeed Lynne that's the beauty of JJ's game,I can barely think of anyone else that did it as consistently as she used to and win the points!

Posted by Aube, thing is to coax your mind not to think of anything,casse-tete! 02/24/2012 at 08:36 AM

hahah, jewell now Aggie is the "tell all lady",eutch!

Posted by tina (Nole No. 5 smells sweet) 02/24/2012 at 08:36 AM

Ah, Memphis.... Sun Records, the Pyramid, the MLK memorial, driving across the bridge into Arkansas just for fun, the best BBQ joints, the "inappropriate" laughs at Graceland.... the one thing that doesn't spring to mind is tennis. Tennis isn't the first thing I think of when I hear "Marseille", either. But tennis is the first thing I think of when I hear "Dubai".

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/24/2012 at 08:36 AM

Hm, now I feel guilty for that moment of nastiness. Bad Jewell.

JJ DFs in the first point of her service game. Then hits into the net. 36% first serve.

Posted by Claire 02/24/2012 at 08:36 AM

I'm guessing you are as unimpressed with Aggie's remarks as I am Jewell. If she had expressed those sentiments post match it would have been understandable but to bring it up at a different tournament and several days later stinks a bit

Posted by Aube, thing is to coax your mind not to think of anything,casse-tete! 02/24/2012 at 08:37 AM

thanks manmixdk,was wondering!

nice pick up volley JJ,I guess JJ is showing us beauty this morning, lovelY!

Posted by manixdk - Caro: is she starting to find her game? 02/24/2012 at 08:38 AM

JJ had a perfect setup for a short backhand smash and passed it up. Yikes.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/24/2012 at 08:39 AM

JJ dropshot gets it back to 30-all. Smash winner for 40-30. And another after tracking down an A-Rad DS and a shot to the corner wins her the game. 4-2.

Posted by Claire 02/24/2012 at 08:39 AM

JJ's a net player?

OK, sure. I can adjust to that

Posted by Aube, thing is to coax your mind not to think of anything,casse-tete! 02/24/2012 at 08:40 AM

hum Aggie acing left and right this tournament...

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/24/2012 at 08:41 AM

Yeah, Claire.

Dubai makes me think of shopping centres first.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/24/2012 at 08:42 AM

Aggie DFs to bring up BP, but then saves it with a lucky netcord.

Posted by Aube, thing is to coax your mind not to think of anything,casse-tete! 02/24/2012 at 08:42 AM

Aggie I said you were acing left anf right, not double faulting...

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/24/2012 at 08:43 AM

Aggie wins the game with a nice lob, JJ knows it has her beat and watches it land in.

Posted by Aube, thing is to coax your mind not to think of anything,casse-tete! 02/24/2012 at 08:43 AM

and lobs her game point,joy!

For me and most "commercants" Dubai is pure gold,as is most United Arab Emirates

Posted by Master Ace 02/24/2012 at 08:46 AM

Zenggi,
Thanks for posting the ATP rules at 2:46 AM in the last post for the changes in 2012. Therefore, I will interpret it like this.

Player A wins 3 250 events and make the final of another which is 150, entered 4 500 events and score 300,90,45,0 with one after USO to comply with the criteria. Therefore, Player A best of 6 after the Masters are 300,250,250,250,150 and 90.

Please correct me if that interpretation is incorrect.

Posted by Aube, thing is to coax your mind not to think of anything,casse-tete! 02/24/2012 at 08:47 AM

no way love forty?what the maharaj?

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/24/2012 at 08:47 AM

Ugh, JJ. Please find your first serve and use it.

Posted by Claire 02/24/2012 at 08:48 AM

Horrible game to hand the first set to Aggie

I'm feeling irrationally angry towards Aggie today and this result is not helping matters :/

Posted by Euris From D.R 02/24/2012 at 08:48 AM

4 ufe wrrors from JJ and is 6-2 Aga.

didnt expected this

Posted by manixdk - Caro: is she starting to find her game? 02/24/2012 at 08:48 AM

At least JJ didn't get bageled like against Caro at the AO.

Posted by manixdk - Caro: is she starting to find her game? 02/24/2012 at 08:49 AM

I exoect JJ to play a much better second set, and hopefully show some patience.

Posted by Aube, thing is to coax your mind not to think of anything,casse-tete! 02/24/2012 at 08:49 AM

cues myself to stop praisng JJ,ain't working

now JJ take the second set, come on!Adje JJ adje!

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/24/2012 at 08:50 AM

I see Aga took the firs set. She seems to be playing well lately. This year she only lost to Vika and she's not in DUbai :-)

If it is the "all-Poles" final will be interesting

anyway, Ajde Jelena, you still can do it in 3

turns out I ran out of my data usage on the phone (I did watch a lot of tennis this month :-)), so no tennis for me till tomorrow, relying on match calls, so please Twibers who watch do share what's going on in that match

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/24/2012 at 08:51 AM

"I exoect JJ to play a much better second set, and hopefully show some patience."

I hope so

Posted by manixdk - Caro: is she starting to find her game? 02/24/2012 at 08:51 AM

Agy's starting to stand in "Caroland" 1½ meters behind the baseline. Not good for her.

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/24/2012 at 08:52 AM

""Caroland" 1½ meters behind the baseline"

lol, manixdk

against Aga doesn't make sense

Posted by Master Ace 02/24/2012 at 08:52 AM

Sokol,
Glad you got your money worth on data usage on the phone as you did a good job:)

Jewell,
Thanks for the match call. Scoreboard was stuck at 3-1 Agnieszka for a while as I guess it was due to power failure.

Posted by Aube, thing is to coax your mind not to think of anything,casse-tete! 02/24/2012 at 08:52 AM

oh boy JJ now that was your to bank!

ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! stop with the errors, pretty please!

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/24/2012 at 08:52 AM

Yeah, no bagel. That's good. And lots of good moments for JJ, too. That set felt closer than 6-2 apart from the last game.

Posted by Master Ace 02/24/2012 at 08:54 AM

Just read that Agnieszka and Jelena(both ladies probably got WC and a huge appearance fee) will play next week in Kuala Lumpur. Will attempt to find a link.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/24/2012 at 08:54 AM

What a terrific point! Finished off with JJ BH DTL.

Posted by manixdk - Caro: is she starting to find her game? 02/24/2012 at 08:54 AM

If you're streaming, you were affected. The world feed was down on my monitor, while Eurosport kept on.

Posted by Aube, thing is to coax your mind not to think of anything,casse-tete! 02/24/2012 at 08:55 AM

Shazam Kaboom, now if you can win these kind of points JJ please adje for this set, just this set first!

Posted by manixdk - Caro: is she starting to find her game? 02/24/2012 at 08:55 AM

Agy was in Caroland again during that rally

Posted by Claire 02/24/2012 at 08:55 AM

'Jankovic not giving up'

It's like music to my ears. Now, can she take this BP?

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/24/2012 at 08:56 AM

Lovely return from JJ gets her the early break.

50% first serve for the 1st set, 16 UFEs, 9 winners.

Posted by nene 02/24/2012 at 08:57 AM

Yay. JJ breaks.

Posted by Euris From D.R 02/24/2012 at 08:57 AM

Aga 7/4 and JJ 9/16 winners/ufe 1st set

but JJ just 50% of 1st in.

Posted by manixdk - Caro: is she starting to find her game? 02/24/2012 at 08:57 AM

And that's what happens when you stay too long in Caroland. It's a nice safe country, and a nice place to visit, but you don't want to live there.

Posted by Aube, thing is to coax your mind not to think of anything,casse-tete! 02/24/2012 at 08:57 AM

see JJ now not giving the break back is the only meaning of a break,like C O N S O L I D A T E !!!

see I spelled it out for you,for once please Adje!

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/24/2012 at 08:58 AM

"Glad you got your money worth on data usage on the phone as you did a good job:)"

it's definitely worth the money, that was a lot of matches :-)
This was the first full month I used the smart phone, so didn't know what to expect data usage wise how much it lasts, so now I know, can plan better for big tournaments.

I still get the internet on the phone, as I have unlimited plan, but now it's lower speed so the streams are not working, have to wait till Monday to get 4G back

Posted by Aube, thing is to coax your mind not to think of anything,casse-tete! 02/24/2012 at 08:59 AM

one more point JJ one more adje!

Posted by manixdk - Caro: is she starting to find her game? 02/24/2012 at 08:59 AM

Good patience from JJ. Agy's finally moved up, challenging JJ more.

Posted by Lynne (Rafalite) 02/24/2012 at 08:59 AM

"JJ 9/16"

too many errors, not typical for JJ, cut them out, JJ

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/24/2012 at 09:00 AM

Not only does she break, she holds, & to 15.

Posted by tina (Nole No. 5 smells sweet) 02/24/2012 at 09:00 AM

Now that was a fine return from JJ!

I realize most people think of shopping when they think "Dubai", but I'm someone who truly hates shopping.

sokol, JJ broke and held to start the second set. 2-0, after a 2-6 first set.
