Your Call, Monday 02/20/2012 - 11:46 AM

Thought I'd bring back this old title while Pete is away until next week. If you'd like to discuss any of today's matches or rehash yesterday's, you can do so here.

another tight service game from Sveta, but she holds

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 11:53 AM

Julia pulled out some good serves outwide at the important moments

40-30

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 11:54 AM

Julia holds, 1-1

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 11:55 AM

great point from Julia, Sveta is not moving well

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 11:57 AM

phew, Sveta holds, 2-1

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 11:58 AM

vera pulled out of Dubai, too? I just noticed the headline. I guess taht hip is not better.

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 11:59 AM

awww, JJ is dreaming of Olympic medal?

Posted by Master Ace 02/20/2012 at 11:59 AM

Sokol,
Yes on that hip. Vera and Na(back) were not on the original draw which Petra was.

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 12:00 PM

trainer on court for Svetlana, they just talkied briefly, I think something about her wrist??? I'm watching on mute, so if anyone is able to provide details, would be great

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 12:01 PM

5th ace for Julia

Posted by Sherlock 02/20/2012 at 12:02 PM

Didn't Barthel just have a good run at recent tourney? Lost to Martic today in qualies. A couple of good young players there.

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 12:02 PM

Julia holds, 2-2

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 12:05 PM

I think Sveta of late often falls into this mode "I couldn't take it in 2, I'll shank everything now" I don't know if it's a fitness issue (might be as she looks out of shape) or mental issues, or most likely both

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 12:06 PM

SVeta holds 3-2, and the trainer is back on court, it's her left wrist :-(

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/20/2012 at 12:07 PM

I'd be soooo happy if JJ could get a medal.

Hey, everyone. :)

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/20/2012 at 12:07 PM

Hope Sveta is ok.

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 12:07 PM

"I'd be soooo happy if JJ could get a medal."

+1
maybe she can steal one? :-)

Posted by Master Ace 02/20/2012 at 12:07 PM

Sherlock,
Yes, Mona lost to Victoria last week in Doha along with a title at Hobart. She still may get in as a LL if another player in main draw w/d. Could that be World Number 1 due to her ankle?

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 12:09 PM

"Could that be World Number 1 due to her ankle?"

I was thinking she might, but she seemed fine in the final against Sam, so we'll see

Posted by Sherlock 02/20/2012 at 12:10 PM

"I couldn't take it in 2, I'll shank everything now"

Lol. I think you're right, Sokol. Probably some of both. Her focus seems to wander, but being tired can't help that process.

Hey, Jewell. :)

I hope JJ can win something big one of these days, whether a slam (very doubtful), a Masters type women's event, or an Olympic medal.

But I don't want her to win today. :)

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 12:10 PM

"World Number 1"

:-))

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 12:11 PM

"But I don't want her to win today. :)"

I wonder why? lol

Posted by Sherlock 02/20/2012 at 12:11 PM

"maybe she can steal one?"

Lol. Excellent! :)

Massages and medals. JJ can do it all.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/20/2012 at 12:12 PM

"maybe she can steal one? :-)"

*giggles*

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 12:12 PM

I remember in one of interviews Sveta said she's not happy to be a top 20 players, and if something won't change soon and she won't get back into top 10 she might think of retirement...

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 12:13 PM

FH winners
Julia-18, Sveta-9

BP for Julia

oh come on, Sveta!

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/20/2012 at 12:14 PM

"Massages and medals. JJ can do it all."

Haters. :)

Oh yeah...she's playing Petra today, right? I can live with Petra winning. :)

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 12:15 PM

another close service game, but she survives, 4-3 Sveta

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 12:16 PM

btw, Sveta fell out of top 20 this week, she's 27 now, and what more important is 5th Russian now, not good for her chances at Olympics, especially with the way Makiri is playing. She needs to improve her results, quick...

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 12:18 PM

6th ace for Julia and she holds at love, 4-4

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 12:21 PM

and again deuce on Sveta's serve

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 12:21 PM

DF to give Julia BP

Posted by Sherlock 02/20/2012 at 12:22 PM

Ouchie. Krajicek 2 and 1 over Bally.

Ljuby gets a hard fought win over Que Serra Serra. Take me away to Marseille!!

Posted by Sherlock 02/20/2012 at 12:22 PM

Roll on, Jewell. :)

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 12:22 PM

Julia breaks with a good return. Sveta challenged, but it was right on the line

Julia to serve for the match

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 12:24 PM

and Sveta talked before thiw seek that she believes one of these year this title (in Dubai) will be hers :-)), not this year obviously :-))

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 12:25 PM

MA, how many point will Sveta lose if she goes out today?

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 12:26 PM

MP

Posted by Sherlock 02/20/2012 at 12:27 PM

Oh, Sveta. Such a pattern lately. :(

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 12:27 PM

Goerges wins 2-6, 7-6, 6-4

oh Sveta... *sigh*

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/20/2012 at 12:29 PM

Sorry, sokol & Sherly.

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 12:31 PM

is JJ playing at Dubai? I thought she injured herself at Fed Cup (tore a muscle)

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 12:33 PM

seems like after that maarthon with Francesca Sveta is having hard time winning 3-setters. I can't remember the last time she did, it's like if she doesn't win it in straights you can bet against her safely in 3 :-((

Posted by Master Ace 02/20/2012 at 12:35 PM

Sokol,
Svetlana will not lose as many this week as last since Doha and Dubai switched places on the calendar. Her Dubai final has already been deducted before this week Dubai started.

sokol - She was on the schedule for today & I haven't read anything about her pulling out. If it's so severe, maybe she'd be better off resting.

Posted by Sherlock 02/20/2012 at 12:40 PM

JCF and Nishikori in Buenos Aires today. Interesting matchup.

Posted by Master Ace 02/20/2012 at 12:43 PM

Sofia defeated Heather in striaght sets at Memphis. For some reason, Sofia does well at Memphis.

Posted by Euris From D.R 02/20/2012 at 12:47 PM

why JJ always play when she is injured? to keep loosing? she should stay at home and recovers 100%.

and about the medal. she need a big win to get back and feel the confident so she can make a comeback

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/20/2012 at 12:47 PM

Not a great day for the Brits, Master Ace - Bally lost earlier too.

Posted by Bismarck 02/20/2012 at 12:52 PM

*awww, JJ is dreaming of Olympic medal?*

someone let her know it's played on grass this time around.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/20/2012 at 12:53 PM

Well, JJ has a slam title on grass, even if it is in mixed doubles. :)

Posted by Sherlock 02/20/2012 at 12:58 PM

Who'd she win that with, Jewell? I had forgotten all about that.

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 01:01 PM

well, I see she's playing...

Ajde, JJ!

(sorry, Sherlock :-))

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/20/2012 at 01:01 PM

Sherly - Jamie Murray back in 2008. They were adorable together, all smiles. Ah, the good old days!

Posted by Sherlock 02/20/2012 at 01:05 PM

Lol, Sokol. No worries. I'm a JJ fan, so win-win for me today. :)

Ahhhh, yes. Now I recall. Thanks, Jewell. :)

Posted by Bismarck 02/20/2012 at 01:05 PM

which she won back in the days when she was a top 5 singles player and had one of the best returns in the women's business.

but mixed dubs is a bit of a joke of an event anyway - maybe just the right thing for JJ.
have the serbs already made their olympic dance cards official? which of the gents will lead JJ onto the green?

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 01:08 PM

"but mixed dubs is a bit of a joke of an event anyway - maybe just the right thing for JJ."

well, she didn't specify what medal, she might be happy with mixed doubles too. Who can she pair up with, doesn't Serbia have some good doubles player? forgot his name...

Posted by Euris From D.R 02/20/2012 at 01:08 PM

Sherly - Jamie Murray back in 2008

it was 2007!!!

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 01:12 PM

If Sveta continues like that she mihgt not even be seeded at RG, she needs good results during American sweing and European clay swing. She's pretty good on clay, so maybe she'll eb able to pull herself up then.

It seems like no change of coaches works for her. She said she feels more comfortable with Russian coach, as non- Russian has problem understanding her, but doesn't seem like her old coach working for her either. honestly, I don't think it's even coach issue, she has some issues she has to figure out by herself

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/20/2012 at 01:14 PM

Yeah, it was 2007, thanks, Euris.

Posted by Sherlock 02/20/2012 at 01:17 PM

Ok, Petra, let's at least make it an interesting match.

Posted by Euris From D.R 02/20/2012 at 01:17 PM

no problem jewell

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 02/20/2012 at 01:18 PM

I can't decide if that's depressing or realistic, Bissy. :)

Ajde JJ

Posted by sokol (Victoria Azarenka, Grand Slam Champion and World's #1) 02/20/2012 at 01:19 PM

I checked my picks and see that I picked Caro to win it. I'm horrible at predictions and so far I'm 1/4, guessing just Vika winning Doha.

I hope I'm wrong with my pick and Vika continues her winning streak in Dubai.

Posted by Zeljana (идемо даље...) 02/20/2012 at 01:20 PM

Nice forehand from JJ followe by... a DF? Ajde Jelena get this set now molim te (please)

Posted by Zeljana (идемо даље...) 02/20/2012 at 01:23 PM

Nice moment with the umpire smiling :) That's what she needs to do more if she can, just enjoy being there...

Great first set Jelena, keep it up. Pleasure to watch when she plays like this

Good Morning Everyone,

Just checking some results

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,I Wont Be Taking Any Prisoners In 2012! 02/20/2012 at 01:31 PM

JJ does have a large bandage on her left thigh?

Posted by CL 02/20/2012 at 01:31 PM

Caroline - thanks for the Maid mini interview. Are we sure the question that was answered with "chocolate cake" was 'the last meal you cooked?' and not 'the last meal you ate?' ;-))

I really would love to see one of her paintings someday. She should auction one of those off for charity. All rackets look at like, but an original 'Bartoli' would be something unique...whether it was great or terrible. Sort of like the Maid herself.

Posted by Zeljana (идемо даље...) 02/20/2012 at 01:32 PM

AM - JJ tore her muscle in Fed cup vs Flipkens

I see Petra's serve still needs some work?

Posted by Zeljana (идемо даље...) 02/20/2012 at 01:36 PM

Yes so far a good game from JJ but Petra making a lot of errors too must be said

Posted by Euris From D.R 02/20/2012 at 01:38 PM

Sorry I hate that dress on JJ

It will be great when she is pregnant

JJ has a great figure and that dress does nothing at all for her.

Madison Keys just couldn't quite get over the hump in that second set against Dushevnina. Good battle from her though. Which is more than I can say for Petra C. What a stinkbomb today.
