Roddick1

The ATP second SF is still underway - er correction, now done, having taken a few more minutes than yesterday's WTA second SF.

Congratulations to the ATP finalists, Andy Roddick and Roger Federer.  The New Balls generation still going strong, it seems.

Please continue tennis related conversations here.

Thanks for the overflow Andrew!

tiebreak, here we go.

TB! *forages for alcohol in fridge*

Okay, let's break the rule.

Time for all side to get their frazzle on!

Oh NO!

Really feel for Murray

Holy Mother of God. Keep your cool A-Rod

stupid NBC still not showing anything important--- GO RODDICK

Let it be in

Match point Roddick saved

Well done Murray

*faints*

gg

Oh Murray is out, so sad for him but hes done so well to get here

Soooo happy for A-Rod. He is crying. How awesome. Well done buddy.

Commiserations to Andy Murray fans. *hugs Jewell*

Congratulations to the Conglomerate.

OMIGAWD!!!!!!!!!

Oh, well. That was too good of a match to end like that in a TB.

I'm more disappointed than I thought I would be to see Muzz lose.

Congrats RAndy fans. Well done by your boy!

Commies Muzz fans (and Brits).

a nation or two stunned

me too

Congratulations to Roddick! Awesome!

I was following along on Radio Wimbledon (couldn't get a working video feed) and it cut out at the crucial match point. Andy being interviewed now.

UNBELIEVABLE! Roddick, you are incredible! What a win! Top 3 of your career.

Whatever happens, this has been such a stellar tournament, that any mention of the Top 4 HAS to include Roddick now.

YES YES YES YES!

What a victory for the Rocket Roddick!!! Nicely done Andy. Congratulations and play the same against roger.

commiserations to murray fans.

Roddick: "I can play some tennis sometimes"

Great match from Roddick, but

Thank you NBC and Andy Roddick....Wimbledon is ruined for this year thanks to you two.

Well I didn't expect Roddick to win - it should be easy job for Federer now..

i'm for Fed and all, but I will cheer randy in the final! i don't think i've ever seen randy in tears, but he is.

Fed's smiling.

Yippee! Those of us on the west coast only have 15 more minutes before NBC starts its coverage of the battle of the Andies! *rolls eyes*

Well, that puts me out of the suicide pool, but I want begrudge ARod that. The best he's played in many years. Congrats to his fans.

And condolences to Murray fans. I have no doubt that he will be back many times in the years to come. A very smart player who has nothing but upside ahead of him.

I feel sorry for MAndy ... but there's always next year. There is no real significance in regards to when he wins it, like this year had to be the year. Hats off the RAndy fans ... nice to see 2 'old dudes' in the Final. ;)

Oh man I am so happy for Andy. Come on Andy, 1 more point, 1 more game, 1 more set, 1 more match. This is just phenomenal.

I am crying tears of happiness. I don't think I've ever done that before.

"Not many people gave me much of chance"
So true AndyR, but you did it! Whatever happens on Sunday, kudos to you!

so no Queen on Sunday then

hello good people!

Congrats to Andy Roddick and Roger Federer fans. Commiserations to Andy Murray and Tommy Haas fans.

Have a good weekend all!

He wins it. Congratulations to Andy Roddick on his third Wimbledon final. Commiserations to Murray and his fans. 143-141 on the scoreboard, but I thought Roddick won it more convincingly than that reflects.

I said yesterday that if Roddick makes the final, he deserves to be in the discussion among the Big 4, ahead of Djokovic and arguably even Murray. His Slam performances this year have been excellent.

What an amazing year for Roddick in the slams so far this year. AO=SF, FO=R16,W=F. And thats a F for final is not gonna change. He ain't beating Federer Sunday as much as I would like to see Randy win.

congrats to a-rod and his fans. commiz to mandy and his fans.

GGGOOOOOOO ROGER!

Wow,Congrats to Roddick also his fans,Linz and Black Matt you must be so proud

Andy M you played lights out tennis in your last couple of matches. The best I have seen. You deserve to be in the final.
Good Luck.

Murray you were too passive today and paid the price.Bad luck.

fed fans and fed haters pls don't take the final for granted

Congrats to Roddick fans. He played well. Perfect tactics.

Commiserations to fellow Lestat fans. No words. The guy just played horrid.

One man's tears is another man's pathos?

OMG...SO happy for Randy!!!

Much as a Fedkad that I am, I think I'd be okay if Andy were to take the whole thing now. Talk about a never-say-die attitude.

sblily: :D

Awwwwwww.... RAndy pausing on the staircase to cry.

Warm congrats to AndyR fans, now go out and do the same tomorrow!
Commiserations to Muzzah fans and thanks to all who commented on the board for us. It SOUNDED like a great match.

At least, this will be the end of all the Brit hype.

Amazing resolve from one of the old timers. Proves yet again, talent isn't enuf in itself.

Coaches mark differences.

But Murray emboldened him at this turning point in the match:
The first game of the third set, 0-40 up on Roddick's serve. He misses the backhand pass.

The match was in Roddick's ascendancy from then on.

"Fed's smiling."

Yeah ... that his old buddy is playing him in the final. Though I'm sure it would have done him well to trounce the MAndy that showed up today, even more.

Sorry, ps, I'm taking it for granted.

Kudos to Roddick, Stefanki, and the institution of marriage.

The games of Federer and Roddick seem to have gone up a level since the knot tying. :)

Did you see him on the stairs there get overwhelmed?

I'm so thrilled for Roddick. So, so thrilled. Very sorry to Murray fans, I know it's got to hurt. But he'll be back next year. He's going to win Wimby and other slams soon. I absolutely believe that.

I'm sorry, Murray fans (and all of the UK), but I do have every faith that he will win Wimbledon one day! And Radio Wimby is saying Jamie Murray is next up on court, so there may be some British consolation.

So another Federer bunny hops into another Grand Slam final.... Should make for an absolutely riveting 3 set final.

Hey Wimbledon, 2004 called, it wants its final back!!

oops that should have read Andy R not Andy M

Roddick wins 142/141. That's 50:50 in my book. Very tight match.

Sincere commiserations to Andy Murray fans. Andy Roddick can play on grass. Apart from one or two rain cramps - a tiny number for Roddick in any match - Roddick played a very focussed match against the smartest player on the tour.

Stat of the match: Andy Murray served at 52% - the same serve % as Roger Federer at AO F 2009. It wasn't enough today. Although I've praised Murray as the smartest player on tour, in one respect he was a bit stubborn, continually serving to the Roddick BH on second serve. Federer I think will mix it up more.

So the dream final won't happen, at least for one year. Somewhere, Her Majesty is adjusting her plans for Sunday afternoon.

Ps, they can take it for granted

Fed in straights.

Amazing, amazing! Is Roddick crying? Both left their hearts and guts out there on the court. Andy, it's all paid off. All the hard work, daring to believe! Awesome. Kudos to the crowd for the support! (Except for a for a few yobs).

Sorry to the Murray fans. He'll break through, he's just too good not to. The Queen shouldn't have said she'd come, I don't know how anyone could deal with that.

"Thank you NBC and Andy Roddick....Wimbledon is ruined for this year thanks to you two."

Jerell : Roddick deserves nothing but credit regardless of what happens from here on. I'm a Federer fan, but I can honestly say that I will cheer Roddick if he wins this. Best "one-Slam wonder" I've seen in my tennis-watching time.

oh wait, did stefanki work with fed? that's some valuable inside knowledge for randy! go randy! (go, fed, too but it's louder for randy.)

hats off to andy roddick, commiserations to andy murray.

ever the king of the understatement, roddick said right after the match, "i can play a little bit of tennis, not many people gave me a chance..."

NBC missed the chance to show that amazing match 'live'
Andy's victory against all odds and NBC is 2 hours behind

Woot! Woot!

Well played Andy Roddick!

But for Nadal's heroism in Australia ... Fed would be going for the slam.

Big Congrats to all the Roddick fans.. He played excellent and deserved to win.

Can't say the same for Muzz. Commiserations to fellow Muzz fans. There's always a next time (hopefully).

wow...from all the responses =), i sure hope fed himself comes in focused and ready to play and NOT take Arod for granted. Arod is playing some great tennis.

"But Federer is back in a pre-Rafaelite world that looked gone for good when he lost in the final last year" - Chris Clarey in NYT

Best pun in history?

Congrats to Roddick, very well done. Can't help but be happy for him when you see how overwhelmed he was, and how much it meant to him.

Massive congratulations to Andy's fans, too, Budour and Rachael and Black Matt and linz and all the others. Fabulous for your guy to be back in the final. :)

British tennis men in Wimbledon SFs. *shakes head*

I am so not getting on this bandwagon ever again. ;-) Devastated for MAndy, and with all due respect, more chances? Anything could happen and he may never get another chance. Got to take them when they arrive, if you can. Pleased with the fight though. He didn't choke, really, he was outplayed consistently, imo.

Oh God, interview with Tim. Cannot cope.

I cannot believe it. Unbelievable. No one deserves this more than Roddick. Great result for him. I wish him the best for the finAls. He really shows the power of perserverAnce in this sport. Just an amazing Amazing win for him. Incredible. C'mon randy!

To Murray fans and the whole of England:

The young lad battled his heart out, and was eclipsed by the smallest permissible margin in those two tiebreaks. It's not a matter of if, but when, he wins a slam, especially at Wimbledon. Murray acquitted himself quite well here; he certainly didn't lose this match. Roddick needed his very best tennis to pull through.

Thanks Aussiemarg, I don't really remember ever being this happy about a win. I am so so so proud of him I am overwhelmed.

*hugs to Andy Murray fans*

"Sorry to the Murray fans. He'll break through, he's just too good not to."

No way to tell, Nalbandian never did and in my mind when he was at his best he had more game than Murray. Tennis is tough sport, being good enough isn't always enough.

Wow...did not see that coming. Well done Andy, you deserve it.
Good to see him back in the finals....it has been tough on him with Nadal and company making the finals every time.
Now that being said, I think Fed is smiling already.

i'm sure even Fed was applauding roddick's efforts today. he was the more consistent of the two andy's.

VC,

I did give Roddick praise. But you know that Fed dodged a bullet playing murray in the final. Last year's US Open, Murray was gassed after playing Nadal in the semis and had nothing on serve in that match.

An all-American Wimbledon sweep is still possible. Men's singles and doubles, and women's singles and doubles. Has that ever happened, and if so, when was the last time!

Jewell: You are gracious as always. :)

I am off to, err, get dressed, ahem. *looks at watch wearily* See you all later!

I'm emotionally spent, and I'm not even a huge fan of either player! lol

Happy for RAndy, his team/fans, but (surprisingly) gutted for the Brits. You could hear the air get sucked out of the stadium the moment the last point ended.

Here's hoping that the final is more than a formality.

Brilliant win for Roddick. He outplayed Murray on all the departments. very happy for him.

Comms to Muzz fan. There are lots of upsides though, he didn't lose coz he succumbed to pressure and he will has a lot of good years to look forward to when he can win this trophy.

congrats to Randy and his fans..
till yesterday i wanted fed to win this, but now i don't mind even if Randy wins this.
Go Fed, Go Randy.

I am so happy about for RAndy. Couldn’t watch the match in the end. So sad he had to meet Roger. If we are going to speak about people deserving (if there such a thing as deserving it) to win, I can’t think of anyone deserving to win Wimbledon against Roger as much as Andy does. He has been denied so much because of Roger. He could have a few more big titles to his name, but he has always kept going, do his best, working to improve etc.
But the h2h is what it is for a reason, so a real sport miracle will have to happen for him to win on Sunday. Which is a shame as having him win Wimbledon would turn a fairly predictable, Wimbledon to have a great end to it.

AndyM is still young so if he should just keep himself injury free he’ll have more chances.

awesome match from both players

so so happy for andy (sad for the other one but happy for randy)

utterly gracious interview from roddick after the match.

Yeah, Jerell ... Fed has got real good at dodging bullets, it seems. You can't win tournaments if you don't win all the matches ... period.

Yeah, Jerell ... Fed has got real good at dodging bullets, it seems. You can't win tournaments if you don't win all the matches ... period.

Anything could happen and he may never get another chance.
-------------------

jewell, i don't want to think that this is at all murray's destiny. for himself, his family, and britain, i would hope that he would have at least a wimby trophy in him someday.

Note to British Press: "BE NICE"

Jerell : I don't want to go into last year's US Open and the "circumstances" behind it. In my mind, Federer won it because he was the better player. Federer did not dodge any bullets, because the better player got through to the final today.

Murray may beat Federer next time he plays him in a Slam, but he has to make the final/semi-final first.

Well, gotta say as a Fed fan, even I'm half-rooting for Roddick. His career-long resiliency is very moving.

Sorry for all Muzz fans and especially the Brits. Tough to take, but I think there'll be other chances at his age and his grass game has really improved. A good show.

True Roddick fans -- Black Matt and others -- treat yourself to your fave meal or drink tonight. Definitely one of the best wins of his career.

Halleujah,

Though Nalbandian has more talent to me than Murray, he doesn't have his work ethic at ALL. We all know that.

Yeaaaaaa, Andy! You. Can. Do. It. -- On Sunday, too!

I will now ease my RAndy bus as close to the Wimbledon grounds as I can get, and I promise not to run over avid's Serena caravan in my excitement. Hang on, beth, and others!

Well, I guess I'll look at this delayed NBC showing.

*strike out the 'will' there.

sblily(Wheeeeeeeeeeee): I guess, it is 'naptime' for me too. :)

This match reminds us that talent is not the only thing one needs to win a match....

what a heads-up this is for american tennis that's supposed to be in the dumps!

as a fed fan, i say that i won't die if Roddick wins wimbly this year. as he said, trying has never been his problem and i admire that a lot.

here's to a great final from roger and andy

Seaweed- I don't believe Larry Stefanki has ever worked with Federer, someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Ruth:

I'm glad to have you driving that bus.

Keep Smiling

wonder what happens to the feller who bought that final ticket for, ouch, 20,000 expensive pounds. yikes.

I still feel Murray is better on a h/court surface though

Time will tell,

I feel for him,all England expected him to win the trophy he again came up short.

He just played too passive and paid the price for it.Well he will learn in the future,

"I will now ease my RAndy bus as close to the Wimbledon grounds as I can get, and I promise not to run over avid's Serena caravan in my excitement. Hang on, beth, and others!"

Ruth - LOL! May I hop on the RAndy bus after tomorrow's ladies final ;-) Even I could not believe how emotional I became at work for AndyR. I would want him to win this one even if all the odds are stacked against him. And as usual the director that always asks me for updates as if on cue came over to my desk to ask who won the fourth set TB and I had to break the news to him (He's of British origin).
